• SONAR
  • Wet/dry mixing - What to do when starting with insert effect

I'm working on a song where my drums (Battery) are sent to an effect (Guitar Rig) which makes them sound at a distance. It's a cool effect, but I would like to be able to adjust the wet/dry mix during the song.

Right now my drums' audio track is using Guitar Rig as an insert effect, so no part of the dry signal is audible (unless I turn off the effect). Unfortunately, some of the components in the Guitar Rig effect are either on or off, so there's no way to automate gradual changes within Guitar Rig.

What's the easiest way to turn an arbitrary on/off insert effect into one where I can adjust the wet and dry amounts gradually?

(I'm guessing I should move the effect to a bus, and then adjust the drum track's send level to that bus, while at the same time adjusting the drum track's output volume in the opposite direction. A bit tedious; are there other ways?)

Thanks!

The bus method is the standard way of doing it, unless you can somehow do it in Guitar Rig. I'm not familiar with Guitar Rig containers, but maybe they have a wet/dry knob you can add? Might be worth asking on the NI Guitar Rig forum because you can do some pretty versatile stuff with containers and the other tools.

Quick thought...could there be a way of doing this with the Split tool in Guitar Rig?

I would use a send and return to your master buss with an aux buss. You can adjust the "wet/dry" mix with the faders of the track and the aux buss.  You can also adjust it via the send level.

Unfortunately, I can't do wet/dry mixing within this particular Guitar Rig module, because some of the sub-effects are binary (either on or off).

So, I need to handle the wet/dry within Sonar.

Take a look at post 4.

OK so here's how you do it in Guitar Rig.

1) Put a "Container" at the top of the chain, and move each item in the chain into the container, so that you have your original effect chain insider the container.

2) Put a "Split" module above the container

3) Move the Container onto "SPLIT B"

Hey presto, the split slider should give you a wet/dry effect. All the way to the left for wet, all the way to the right for dry.

I use John's solution all the time w/ guitar rig and other sims.  It is easy and quick.

I went ahead and used the bus approach. I've done it before, and found it a little annoying having to automate two levels (the send and the output) instead of just one, but it seems easier than figuring out the Guitar Rig side of things.

I wish there were a way to have a single envelope control the wet/dry mix. I'm guessing that's the sort of thing Logic users can do, since their interface is programmable.

I agree with John
