I've had Sonar Producer 8 for 4-5 years now and I'm only now finding some time to do some experimenting. I used dim pro acoustic bass, a z3ta+ pluck arp, dim pro e-pianos, Roland GroveSynth vibes, dim pro pad, and session drummer drum loops. The chords in this tune are similar to the jazz standard "Caravan" but the melodies are entirely different.
So here is my latest try. It's better that some others I've done before.

Interesting. I'm still on Sonar 8 so I recognise all the sounds in here. I don't pretend to 'get' jazz at all, it's a bit over my head tbh, but this sounds good, it grooved along nicely. The only distraction for me was the wide stereo panning on the tom toms, which seemed a little odd.

Following on from James comment about the toms being so wide the whole thing sounds a little wide with not a great deal of centre focus.  Other than that it sound quite good here, thanks for sharing.

Hi Loran,
I listened, but I have to admit that I can't follow this.  it seems to have a lot of timing problems - maybe that's what you're calling "jazz"?  all of the different sounds have different reverbs on them and that makes it very confusing sounding to me also.

I am not trying to discourage you, I hope you continue making music!  cheers

Thanks all for your critiques. New sets of ears are very helpful and welcome. The panning issue didn't seem to be a problem when I listened on my car stereo but was really quite evident when I heard it with a different set of headphones. I also think I need to watch the meters more closely because there was a little clipping distortion in a few places. Since I'm just beginning to use Sonar lately I only use presets without adding any reverb. The presets have reverb built in. Beagle's point about reverb is a good one because some of the recording seemed a little washed out.

Thanks again everyone for your comments.

I revised the panning of the drums and pianos. Added some compression. I think this is a little better. Although it may not be a familiar or popular genre to some it has done pretty well lately in Soundclick in the Modern Jazz category.

Certainly different.  I heard many things I like and a few I don't.  Those things are all personal preference.  I haven't delved into the synth world much at all but you seem to have a good working knowledge of them.
