Hey all, I'm working on another project where I'd like to score some string parts in Finale and import them into X1? If I create the Finale files with the right tempo that matches the X1 project, then I assume I will be fine? Anything I need to be aware of with the grid or tempo settings? -ryan

The tempo doesn't matter. You'll be exporting a MIDI file from Finale and when you import it into Sonar, it will follow the project tempo. I'm assuming your MIDI tracks are in meter.

yeah I intended on making the files in Finale as the same tempo as the Sonar project, so I'm hoping I can just drop them in at the appropriate marker and it will work. On a related question... can I draw in a fade in or at least smooth out the initial attack so it doesn't sound so mechanical when the string MIDI parts come in? -ryan

sorry to revive this.... I've got them MIDI files imported successfully, but there is no sound when they play. Nothing is muted and the other tracks play just fine, not the MIDI ones. I assume I have a signal flow or synth issue within Sonar?

What soft synth are you using?

when I import the MIDI tracks - the input strip and console view both show Session Drummer or some variant of Drum Loop. And I can't change them to anything else. The MIDI files were string/orchestra files created in Finale.

You don't need to import MIDI files, File-Open should do it or drag and drop.

Hi, one good way to check if the midi notes are correct after import is to check them from within the EVENT INSPECTOR.

many times, importing midi files from external sources will result in additional control data, patch data and others.

using the event inspector, you may use the FILTER to check off any irrelevant data and then deleting them off. this will give you a very clean slate within Sonar. you may then add any other midi cc from within Sonar.

to get the midi data to play thru your instrument, just add your instrument and assign the I/Os on the TRACK PANE correctly.

hope this helps...

If you have not started yet, I would:

Export a single midi track from Sonar.
Open it in Finale and do the work you want.
Export from Finale and import it into Sonar.

When I work in Finale, I get the project the way I want there and export it as a midi file. I then put the midi file in the folder where Sonar keeps it's projects. I usually put it in it's own project folder. I then right click on the midi file and select "open with" and direct it to Sonar. I do this so all the settings for the song such as tempo, key, etc are there and I don't have to recreate all that stuff. If I have to go back and add to it after I've done all the Sonar work, I'll just add it to the original Finale file and then import it. I've not had to go back and do this so I don't know if Finale can export individual parts or not. LOL! I've been using Finale since 3.51 and I don't know that. lol!

I got it working. I just had to point it to the correct MIDI synth (using the Microsoft or SONAR ones) Edit --> Preferences --> MIDI Question, is there any way I can get SONAR to recognize and use the Finale (Garritan) MIDI instruments? Those are way better, quality wise. -R
