So, where did this news comes from? How reliable is the source?

For all we know, it will be called Z.

I think there is so much work on upgrading Sonar X2 and Cake leave it for next version X3.

I think that would be a mistake. X2b doesn't have to address all of our hatreds, but there's some apparent and frequent bugs still left in there. Not fixing those painfully obvious bugs would render X2 a black-eye on Cakewalk.

I mentioned before in another thread that I would pay for a better working DAW, one that has been tested and tested and broken and fixed and tested by some very serious teams aimed to do nothing by TRY and break it. X3 could be that thing that undergoes such rigorous testing, but MAN, if they don't fix some serious gripes we have and not pack it up for only Windows 8, or only new features, then X3 will be a sour welcome for sure.

They could be working to get it on the Mac. I'm sure Roland would prefer that.

I think there will be an X2b. Cakewalk have been completely consistent over the years. X2 is a new product will get some TLC for some time to come I think. It's their flagship product.

This is all conjecture at this point - we haven't a clue of what Cakewalk -or- Roland are planning.

I am in the X2b camp - just a gut feel.  A release of X2b soon would ease my concerns about Cakewalk's place in Roland's grand plan.

If next thing is called X3, we'll be waiting until the Fall.

Making Sonar multi-platform would require a tremendous effort, and I'm not sure it would even be worth it, considering the DAW's which already operate there, and what would appear to be a shrinking traditional Mac environment.

If you are referring to iSonar, that would be another thing altogether.

btw - I am agonizing about upgrading from X1 to X2 tonight - given the current video offer and the other incentive.

If I do pull the trigger, you'll be seeing a lot questions being posted by me.

pbognar - I think you'll either miss Layers, or you'll love Lanes. I miss Layers, myself. If you're like me and think the X2 color scheme is cartoony and outdated, there is X1 Light as a color-scheme option you can load.

Otherwise, I think things are "ok" in X2, but definitely could be better. I'm cursing the 32/64-bit Waves-Shell, since Sonar X2 barfs at having both 32 and 64-bit Waves installed, (Wavelab 7 64-Bit doesn't support bridging so well, so I have to have the 32-bit Wavelab 7 installed for older Algorithmix and Flux plug-ins to work alongside Waves). It's an icky situation I have with 32-bit Waves plug-ins, and Sonar absolutely pukes often when having both 32 and 64-bit Waves plug-ins installed. Sonar X2a crashes in every Project because of this.
