I've always been put off by the thought of changing anything more than 6 strings, which I'm too lazy to do most of the time as it is
So that's stopped me from buying: 8 string guitars, 12 string guitars and lutes.
I thought I hated changing guitar strings. Then I bought my Riviera, which has a Bigsby.
That brought the suckiness of changing strings to a whole new level. My other guitars suddenly didn't seem so bad.
That doesn't look quite as bad as changing nylon strings though....
Actually my hatred of changing strings has reduced slightly ever since I switched to the "back around the post, under and over" method. I was always a little sketchy about how the string should be wrapped around the post for best results, and since switching to this method I've found that my guitars take less "breaking in" and stay in tune better than they have in almost 30 years of playing.
The method is demonstrated in this old D'Addario video (complete with Joe Satriani soundtrack), from the 1:00 mark:
Hi sharke & Rain ,
I may as well respond using this quote since it has both your conversations in it ...
Hi sharke ,
I knew I was in deep $hit the other day when I went over to the Music store to buy guitar strings .
"Why" I drove over there to the music store to buy guitar strings with an empty gig bag in the trunk of my car is way beyond my normal comprehension .
I had taken great pride in visiting the deals forum for months and not yielding to temptation ...
So much for the discipline of Frugality and Virtue ...
I think it's safe too say, we all know by now what eventually did happen
Nice vid on string changes ...that trick does makes a diff on tuning stability .
Hi Rain ,
Yes , the Bigsby tailpiece is a little touch and go for changing guitar strings ..IMHO , one string at a time seems OK
Full sized Hollow Body Jazz Box's are the guitars I have too be the most careful on when changing guitar strings.
The Guitar bridge is held in place only by the tension of the guitar strings ...
Once that bridge falls off the top of the guitar , you got too re-setup that whole guitar from scratch .
Yep , it's back to the drawing board with the action , the intonation , the whole enchilada ...been there plenty of times
all the best,
Kenny
