Much appreciated, thanks. It's put some concepts into a mental framework for me.

Just a question: doesn't three dots in the tempo selection mean a waltz?

TBH I haven't a clue, I just assumed that the star markings were an indication of how likely that tempo was to be the correct one. I haven't seen a mention of them in documentation anywhere but if it was waltz time it would be 3/4 and hence set by the beats per measure figure.

I don't know for fact though, as I said I'm no expert I do what I do and most of it I've figured out by reading the docs and trial and error. I have discovered that the clip map is a big part of getting it to work. While editing the clip map you can also use "Merge & Lock Markers" from 2 or more tracks if those tracks contain other beats. For example a kick track might have beats 1 & 3, while the snare has 2 & 4.

In the CAKE TV Part 1 Webinar, Seth shows in detail how to groove match with Audiosnap, if that helps any, it was right before X1d came out. Might be worth checking out. Good luck!

I read through the Ref Guide and it is very specific on making sure you do certain things in certain orders or it wont work.  Under or in each section it also gives a brief explaination of when each type of snap, pool, etc... is used.  This particular circumstance you are asking was outlined in there.
Id recommend reading all of the features on it first and when they are used before jumping right into trying to line everything up the first time.
Have you saved an extra copy of the project before you attempt changes? Nice to have one to fall back on until yyou figure it out

One thing I did notice in the article above (which is very good) they didnt discuss splitting the beats into seperate clips. I believe this really helps with the algorythms and keep the sound good on drum tracks.

I think it all starts about page 583
Heres a copy of a page I was talking about with suggested uses.

Synchronizing audio and the project tempo
There are many reasons why you may want to synchronize audio clips with the project tempo. The
following list presents a few common examples.
AudioSnap provides two ways to quickly synchronize audio and the project tempo map:
Applying an audio clip’s internal tempo map to the project’s global tempo map. Use this
method if you want the project tempo to match an audio clip’s tempo and have audio beats
aligned with the project’s time ruler.
This is useful in the following scenarios:
• If you recorded an audio track without using the metronome, and you want the project’s
measure and beat boundaries to align with the audio. For example, you may have recorded an
audio track that you would like to use as the tempo reference when recording additional tracks.
• If you want both audio and MIDI edits to snap to audio beats.
• If you want to use the Quantize and Groove Quantize commands on audio clips, and have
audio beats quantized correctly.
• If you want to remix an existing song that has been imported into SONAR (from an audio CD or
MP3 file, etc.). In order to add new drum loops and MIDI instruments that play in time with the
original song, you need to create a tempo map from the original song.
For details, see “To sync the project tempo to an audio clip” on page 587.
Applying the project’s tempo to a clip’s tempo map. Use this method if you want a clip to
follow the project tempo.
This is useful in the following scenarios:
• If you want to synchronize new audio with existing audio.
• If you want to tighten up a new audio track so it fits well with the timing and tempo of an
existing track.
• If you want to globally change the project’s tempo after audio has been recorded.
For details, see “To sync an audio clip to the project tempo” on page 587 and “To copy the project
tempo to an audio clip’s tempo map” on page 588.

This is good stuff. Thanks, will look into it next weekend.

I use another DAW for sorting out timing issues - that one has very "elastic audio warping" facilities. Till X1 gets as good as that, I wiill keep using the other DAW for audio quantizing.

What is the other DAW LJB? Thanks.

Timidi, Let's just say if you google the words in quotation marks you'll find it amongst some of the top DAWs. Sone even claim it's the industry standard for anyone who wants professional tools :O) I just like the elasticity of its audio warping.

LJB, from your experience, how much different is this from Sonar's own Ctrl+Drag the end of a clip?

I am getting to the point where I want to get a second DAW.

I only do demos and it's only a secondary income, but I still need to be able to deliver to deadlines occasionally.
