What I've experienced is memory issues with 10 eating RAM. The first problem was the superfetch service causing the kernel to grow to a couple of GB (that's GB with a "G"). Since disabling superfetch (which isn't necessary as I have an SSD drive but MS turns it on anyway), the kernel process stays at 144 KB (that's with a "K", not an "M").

I took a look at this service today and didn't see anything unusual on my RAM usage........it showed something like 3.3GB's out of 16GB's was being used (I had a few programs and a bunch of webpages open at the time).

Is that RAM eating issue a constant thing or when you run certain applications?

With superfetch enabled, after a few hours the process with Name="System and compressed memory", and Description = "NT Kernel & System" in Task Manager details grew to more than 2GB. Disabling superfetch solved that problem. And again, superfetch isn't really of any value with an SSD drive anyway.

The other problem involving Private Session memory seemed to be related to one of my browsers and one or more of the unbelievably huge number of tabs I have open at all times. I migrated some things to a different browser and closed a bunch of tabs and the problem seems to be resolved. I suspect bad/incompatible scripting was causing a resource leak. And needless to say I deliberately selected certain websites I suspected as the most likely culprits to move to a different browser. But as it's hard to see what's eating Private Session memory since it isn't associated with any specific process/thread I'm not sure. In any case I don't have to reboot every 12 hours (!!!) anymore because Windows is no longer growing to commit 30GB of memory in that time period.

I should also mention that with Windows 10 they do seem to have fixed the DWM (Desktop Window Manager) memory leak, at least in my case.

I'll be using an SSD too so no superfetch.  Was the browser you referred to Chrome by any chance?  'Cause it runs a new process for every tab you have open and I started to notice some issues when I had about 50 tabs open!

No it was (or appears to be) the "old" Opera 12.18, but only with certain websites. The "new" Opera is actually based on the Chrome engine, and though much less memory efficient in general (and dumbed down considerably  ), it looks OK. And note that when I say I keep a huge number of tabs open, think "too many to count" spread across several browser windows. We're not talking about a few dozen or something trivial like that.

But searching for memory issues after a Windows 10 upgrade reveals many people are having problems - but again, many are not, so...

Only ran into two problems with the update - which is two more than any of my friends -
  • Machine ran really hot, fixed by updating BIOS and chipset drivers.
  • Hibernate shutdown option was activated, meaning a ~7Gb file was created on my C drive. Ran "powercfg -h off" in elevated command prompt to fix.
No problems otherwise.

*shrugs* it's Windows.  I configured mine at install time to not send all my personal guff to the 'cloud' (I don't even use any cloud based storage tbh).  I removed the annoying Cortana bollox and since then it's been like wearing a comfortable old pair of shoes.  Perhaps Tartan shoes with 'Bay City Rollers' embossed on the side, but comfortable nonetheless.  It is a dramatic improvement over W8, and I would say also an improvement on W7, but I still run my full-fat licensed W7 Pro OS on my DAW box.  I've upgraded my 2x W8 machines to W10 for free though (a laptop and a HP 360 chromebookesque thing), and my work laptop has also been upgraded to W10 (Enterprise).

Great, thanks for the info.  Guess I'd better do this quick, not many days left to get W10 free!

I'm also going to do this (tonight) on the family PC......I'm going to do a clean install of Win 8 and then upgrade to 10. Just finished doing my backups.

Not saying you shouldn't do it now, but I'm one of those betting the "free deadline" is just a ruse to manipulate as many people as possible into upgrading now.

[EDIT: IT worked on me! ]

I wish Cakewalk would try that ruse on me!
