I' a Microsoft geek so i might be a little biased. But I love windows 10. I have been testing it from the first build in insiders to last build now, and even used insider previews as main os on my daw. now days i use the regular one on my daw but have insider preview on my laptops and Surface.

I want everyone to go to Win10. That way Windows 10 get even better, and if you use insider you can even have a finger in the new stuff comming.

For the collection of data, I trust Microsoft over government any day. First of, Microsoft doesnt have guns, and second. You can in fact sue them, if they miss use your data. Government do that all the time but no one can do anything about it.

I've read that you can turn off the automatic Windows Update by turning off the service itself.  Then you have to start it manually when/if you want to get updates.

With the way that I use my PC's, if they start rebooting in the middle of the night I will be heading up the road to Redmond to throw rocks into their Windows®.

Well, for better or worse, I installed Windows 8.1 on my SSD drive tonight (which was blank, my Windows 7 OS, which I'm still using, is on a different drive).  After all that hassle, I tried to upgrade to Windows 10 only to find that the free upgrade ended yesterday.  Well, for the "normal" public anyway.  A little digging and I found that there's a new website that will be up for another few months as long as you're willing to have no shame (it didn't stop me).

Here's the website to see first, the link is in the article: http://betanews.com/2016/07/29/get-windows-10-free-after-the-deadline/

Once it FINALLY finished downloading, installing, updating and having me setup stuff I got scared and rebooted back to this old OS for now.  I'll keep going forwards tomorrow but it's too late now and too unfamiliar!  Hehe...

Hopefully by Monday I'll have a solid Windows 10 machine with a virtual machine (probably also running Windows 10 now that I now I can upgrade for a while longer).  The VM will be my internet whore and, should she pick up a virus, I'll just restore back to a golden copy.  I've decided there's no reason to have a second VM for work and development, I'll just do that on the host machine (much better for high-end graphics too).

Let's see... 2:45am.  Almost time to take a nap, eh?

I have not had any issues with the updates much. But, yeah, I would like to have a little bit more control of my own computer, and can't.

1984 is still alive and well, and it will kill anyone that does not stand up with it! What else is knew, and we allow politicians to continue playing games with us, and kiss the folks that do control us. I can see, how Microsoft thinks that being able to update faster is important, and might help with viruses and many other baddies, but in the end, I have no written assurances, that they are never going to "look" or say anything about what they found. Or, even better, and fully ready for the paranoia camp, they are doing what the government is not smart enough to do, and will break the jive wars by _________ real quick. Not to mention _________________ and ....

I have a laptop and another machine to upgrade. I think I will be purchasing one disk, so I have it, anyway, and then I can use it to reload anytime I need to. Surprisingly enough, I have had no issues with any of the machines in any way. I was afraid to upgrade the music machine since it has the sound card made by M-Audio ... the only card I have ever seen that has so many ins and outs ... that will never be used and no one knows how to use them!

I was not comfortable having to chase drivers, specially for a company now exactly well known to work well with Windows. Their software for that car, is still bizarre and worthless. So many choices, always when they are not being used, of course!

Ironically, just putting a bare-minimum install of Windows 8.1 on my SSD drive was far more of a hassle than the Windows 10 upgrade.  I had a BSOD with some bizarre Kernal Power event message followed by this informational event: "The system has been constrained to a periodic tick."  I was wondering if I needed to take my PC to a vet!

My roommate tried for hours to get the free Windows 10 upgrade on the last day and couldn't so I assumed their servers were slammed.  Because I went that sneaky route I had no issues at all.

So, now I've got two working OS' which means I can run back to this one whenever I want as I get the other one going.  Also on the docket for today is a full Windows 10 tutorial (watched at double speed and skipping over chapters on things I won't be using like their new mail client).  Going from Office 2007 to Office 2016 and Visual Studio 2005 to VS 2015 will probably require watching a bunch of tutorials (already downloaded) as well!

It's definitely going to be weird jumping that many versions of things, but it will make my resume look a bit more current!  LOL!

Make sure you read the fine print on the Office 2016. Anything that you "create" in it, basically is owned by Microsoft, since you are using a "free product" and they provide the ability for you to be more effective and duah and dah and deh ... with it.

This is a serious concern for many of us, and pretty soon all the DAW's will do the same thing, as a way to steal material from you. The days, of you and I pen'ing something or other and having it on our hands is long gone.

I'm not even sure, however have not asked, if I write a screenplay, and make a copy of it, if I can send it to the Library of Congress immediately since I do not trust Microsoft, and their ability to steal something. I would think, and hope, that eventually Congress can draw a line between business materials and work, and creative materials, that should, rightly, belong to their owner.

Just crazy ... someone writes about 1984, and then in 2016, it is happening, and no one can do anything about it, or is interested in doing so and the only people we can put in government are the richest that already steal from us all! I don't get it! Not sure anyone else does, either!

1.  Anything I create using Office 2016 belongs to ME, not Microsoft.
2.  It certainly wasn't free.

Not really sure what you meant to say either...

I tried to upgrade to 10 just so I would have it at some time later and intending to go immediately back to 7. It didn't work out that way. During the 'upgrade' I got some really cryptic error that almost bricked my system. It wouldn't let me repair Win7 nor reload from scratch as I kept getting errors about the drives. You can imagine I was not a happy camper!

After stripping all the drives out and re-installing an old drive just for a reload to win7. I was finally able to reload to a recent backup and get everything back to working. Talk about a lost weekend...
