hi everyone, couple questions, how long will this forum still be working?
another question, what's the best way to move all my stuff from sonar to wherever i end up landing? could i convert each track from each song to a .WAV file, put them in Dropbox or an external hard drive then import them to the new DAW?
any thoughts would be appreciated.
i've received so much good advice from you people. i gotta tell ya, this sucks.
thanks

Your WAV files will be where they are now, in the project's audio folder on your hard drive. If you use a different DAW, just copy them from there. Hopefully you have back-up copies somewhere else too.

As to the forum, can't say, but I doubt it'll be up indefinitely. There are 2 other forums set up already in case this one goes down.

That's fine if all of the waves start at the begining of the song. Otherwise it is better to export them, taking note of the start position of teh export (or selecting the timeline from the start) and exporting them manually. You can also choose what you would like included in the export dialogue ( fx, eq, automation etc).

Forum: anybody's guess...

Transfer: I'm planning to go through important projects and render everything to individual tracks that are all full-length, i.e. left-justified, for easiest trasfer to a different mixing environment in case that becomes necessary or interesting. That's relatively easy and can be semi-automated.

For more control, if it seems useful, I will then make MIDI tracks for any soft-synths involved, and save those plus plugin presets in the project folder, with accompanying notes. Same for any FX that I might want to be able to change settings on at a later date. That's a fair bit more work and cannot really be automated at all, so I would only do that if/when a project seems important enough to justify it.

Haven't decided what I might be importing things into yet, but that's just future-proofing even if I decide to continue working in Sonar for the foreseeable future, which is certainly one option...

This is true.
