I recently acquired Pro Tools 10 student. As a teacher, I was able to purchase this very cheap. The reason I did is, because it just easier to swap files over to my colleagues in Canada.
Before installation, Pro Tools gives list of things to do to your PC to make it function better. Things I should know (and did) but somehow over the years, I didn't do.
After doing these adjustments, Sonar X2A now runs like a dream. I am not a person to say one DAW is better than another. They are all brilliant, but I just happen to use Sonar as my main DAW and always will. Everything works for me with Sonar. There are very few surprises.
Pro Tools is a different animal and requires different procedures to tame it. I havent bought the whip yet. I am looking through Amazon now. I've found a chair

Avid has a page on their website which talks about optimizing a PC for Pro Tools, which however applies to any DAW on the whole. There's some good advice there, like creating a separate Windows user account for audio work.

Just to be clear - you used the recommendations from Avid for running Pro Tools, and it had a definite impact on the performance / stability of Sonar X2a?

There is a standard setting for playing music - it is much the same settings no matter what daw.  Windows settings.  There are more than a few lists on the internet but it has been a while since I tried to google it.

I am aware of these generic recommendations.  I was hoping there was something unique in the PT recommendations which applied to the sometimes over sensitive Sonar X series (no negativity  intended).

Just so you know. The windows 7 Optimization advice AVID show on their website in the video are the WORST EVER advice on WINDOWS 7.
* disable AERO
* Background task
* Disable theme
* and on...

Press-------> Interface Tour-------> System Setup ----> Desktop Composition, Performance Option, or

What a joke...Talk about f-uking up the computer working with AUDIO. Check real advice instead.
Even more funny he use 8 GB RAM on Widows 7 x32bit? Also in the video he has activate the "windows sound", so every click and dialog give you a sound? That is one thing you should delete.

The optimization make PRO TOOLS work because its a old Win98, XP program that has not been update the last 10 year and doesn't work on Windows 7. This advice should not be use on any other programs, DAW, GAME, you name it on the planet.

Good advice.........not....

Only tweaks that you can use is ----> Power Schema and UAC off, the rest is just stupid and horrible tweaks by AVID.

SONAR , Cubase and other programs need AERO to be on. For example what AVID recommend you to do is to tell the computer not use the GPU on the graphic-card to run the graphic instead route all graphic to the CPU? Total stupid tweak and make the computer perform less! No sane person would ever suggest that on Windows 7, 8 or VISTA???
I can go on...
Try to revert all you did and go back if you can!

I have done nothing to windows, put the key in and drove.
I use both soundcards.

maybe some older computers need the system settings, but I find a lot of newer computers these day respond well to a simple install and go.

Sweetwater had a tech page that lays out how to optimize Windows.  I trust them more that AVID.
