I did manage to get this working when I first set it up but I need to change some names but can't remember how! (DOH!)
 
I have Studio Drummer loaded in KONTAKT 5 and I have the Outputs assigned
 
When I first set this up I could see these OUTPUTS mirrored in the SONAR audio track input menu
 
However, I needed to change some of the OUTPUT assignments within KONTAKT
 
Now the OUTPUT names in KONTAKT are "out of sync" with the list of Audio TRACK INPUTS within SONAR
 
How do I edit this INPUT list (ie the one that appears when you click on the Audio Track INPUT button, select the synth and the "synth OUTPUT" list that then appears on the "flyout" menu)
 
OR
 
Is there a way to force SONAR X2 to update this synth OUTPUT list so that they get back in sync?
 
Any help would be very welcome!

to the best of my knowledge both Cakewalk and NI are aware of this problem, and have been for some time. I believe this to be true because I've whined and complained to both of them early and often<G>!

I've tried a handful of procedures, and a couple of recommended tricks, and nothing works every time - which is really frustrating since it's a computer - it isn't supposed to think for itself<G>.

I will be watching this thread in the hopes that I am way out of date on this!

Yeah, I'll be keeping an eye on this too, Kontakt is a great tool but messing with the outputs and inputs gives me a headache sometimes, especially when using multiple modules(ie., Session Horns plus Vintage Organs, etc.)

FWIW...

my current work-around is to use track folders. I set them up once for a specific collection of libraries and then I don't have to deal with inputs and outputs ever again<G>!

For example, I have three instances of Kontakt pre-configured for Orchestral Essentials, and another two configured for KH CS2 and CB2. I have two instances set up for various percussion libraries, one for Session Strings and Session Horns, and so on.

So when I need an instrument, even if I only need legato strings, I'll just load the track folder (up to 16 audio tracks and maybe 20 MIDI tracks) and then when I'm done I can delete the unused tracks if I so desire.

This works with Kontakt5 because I can save the track folder with all the instruments completely purged. Background loading works that well. I can't remember if Background Loading was added to a later version of Kontakt4, but I had abandoned this approach when I was using Kontakt4 because it used up so much memory.

Until whoever broke output names fixes it this is a decent workaround for me...

If I understand the situation properly, you would open the Kontakt UI and make sure the Output section appears at the bottom (there is a button at the top to make that appear/disappear).

Click on the name of each output channel and then make sure you select all of the name, and over type with whatever name you want, then hit Enter.

I name all of my output channels in Kontakt to whatever instruments are loaded - piano, bass, organ, etc., and then all of my track input assignments to Kontakt include the easily readable channel names from what I set up in Kontakt.

You would then have to go redo any existing track input assignments, but that should take care of it.

You understand!

I use the batch process to build a new output section while I am building the multi that I am going to associate with a track folder.

The 'issue' that drove me to my current approach is the output naming bug/feature where the first seven or 8 outputs are properly named in Sonar, but after that the names get screwed up. The outputs are all still correct, it is just the labels that get messed up.

The 11th stereo pair might be labeled "Stac Horns" in the Kontakt output UI, but in Sonar it might say "Stac Horns/Solo Trumpet" or whatever instrument precedes or follows the track I want. It's easy enough to count to the 11th stereo output in the Sonar drop-down list, but I don't want to have to do it every time.

The memory footprint for each Kontakt instance is sufficiently small that I can get away with it, even with a meager 8GB of memory.

Make sense?

I DO see that issue - it never comes up for me, because (I remember now), I always stop loading instruments at either 4 or 5, for a single instance of Kontakt.

If I need any more instruments, I add an additional Kontakt instance.

Seems to be the way it works at this point in time, to the best of my knowledge.

Up until 4 or 5 instruments though, it works fine.

I just checked the size of Kontakt 5, in the vstplugins folder, and the 16 out dll is only 558k in size, if that helps any.  There is a Kontakt 5 dll that runs at 37 MB, but I am loading that 16-out version, so you might be able to get away with loading that additional instance.  

Give it a shot and post back.

OK, yeah, the stopping at five outputs was my solution for a long time too!

I'll have to do some experiments again, but it turns out that the overall memory footprint for the three different flavors of Kontakt (8 output, 16 output, and 32 output) are about the same. The file sizes you referred to are a bit misleading. Those 558k files are really just pointers to the main dll, and they are used to configure it with fewer outputs. The same dll file is actually loaded, and it's the big one.

One trick to trim the size of the memory footprint is to thin the database. If you have lots of libraries with entries in the database Kontakt starts to take up a LOT of memory.

Of course Cakewalk or Native Instruments COULD make this all moot by fixing the problem<G>...
