Hi,

I have read some forum info and even found the OMF help section in X2 it says I should be able to import a session from pro tools or Final Cut into

Sonar. When I go to change the 'Files of Type' under File>Import>Audio, .omf is not available. Can anyone figure out why that file type is not an

option?

Thanks, guys!

That is normal, as OMF is not an audio file. Wave and AIFF are audio files. If your importing an OMF file into Sonar from Pro tools. yuo need to export it form Pro tools as an OMF and you need to ahve this $500 adapter for pro tools to do so.

try "File > Open" and change the file type to OMF in the file open dialog.

You don't "import" an OMF in SONAR...you open an OMF.  Or you can "open with" and choose Sonar for your OMF.

If you have an exisiting project and you want to import the OMF...you'll have to copy and paste tracks from one Sonar project (your OMF) into the target Sonar project.

Remember Sonar is not a Video editing app, so if you are looking to import video from projects like Final Cut you might run into some trouble.  There is only one video file at a time open in Sonar.

I have a video partner who has exported the Omf files from Final Cut Pro and I am trying to import them into Sonar. Whenever I read the help

page on OMF files that Sonar provides, I am unable to import the file because 'that file type is not supported' even when everything I read says

omf's are.

AH! I get it now. I am trying to open it as an audio file instead of opening it as a file from File>Open.

@Jimbo 88, It is just the audio in the OMF, we compressed the video to a .mov and I'm just going to import it and sync it up.

Thanks so much!

Just File > Open > And then open the OMF file.

However you may or may not get errors depending on how it was exported from FCP.

In my experience depending on the Movie length you shouldnt try and export an OMF thats over 1.5gb as they tend to break.

If this is the case get the VT guy to export at file sizes below 1.5gb into separate chunks.

As I say, depends if its a short film or feature length.

OMF's are notoriously fiddly from one platform to another.

Thats not true...Open Media Framework deal with an interchangeable cross platform timeline data in reference to mainly SMPTE.

I use Sonar, Pro Tools, Premiere, Final Cut Pro and Also Digital Performer....I have issues (niggly ones) from one platform to another But let me stress...YOU DO NOT NEED TO SPEND 500 bucks on an adaptor.

this is simply not true.

Ah yes....markyzno brings up a great point.   File sizes are limited in OMFs.

I guess we are going to need a new standard for OMFs soon.  64 bit OMFs??

Good luck...

they really can be a pain in the ass to deal with all the cross platform settings......

FCP to SONAR = No Problem

FCP to SONAR then to Digital Performer = HELL

FCP to DIGITAL Performer - HELL

PREMIERE to ANYTHING = MODERATE Hell

Pro Tools to SONAR = No Problem

Btw, remember to NEVER embedd ANYTHING ESPECIALLY video.

Video should be added to the project separately, codecs can cause further devilish behaviour.

Get the audio working first then import the video to the timeline as a separate asset. Make sure the FPS are matched and the framerate.
