I received 5 phone calls today from someone I think was from India. I purchased tech support from microsoft and few years back when I had Vista. The phone call today showed the caller as unknown. This guy said he was offering a renewal for my new PC. How he knows I have a new PC is beyond me. Anyway, he said to prevent my PC from going down I have to renew and pay him $300. I can't speak hardly at all but I managed to say get bent and hung up. He kept calling saying that I'm taking a big chance of losing that new computer if I didn't get whatever it was he was selling. 3 calls after that and each time he'd say things like you never know when your PC will get infected etc. It sounded like extortion to me!

You don't have to talk to the guy . Take your phone in the bathroom and flush the toilet a few times .
If that don't work  you can always hit him up with one of my two favorites ...
Plan A , I like to flip on my vacuum cleaner and put the phone next to it since I can get to it fast ..
Plan B , I let my dog Duke bark into the phone for a while ...Duke likes to get phone calls and talk on the phone

Definite scam.  My mom had one that said they could tell remotely that her computer had a virus.  She's never had a computer.

You should be able to call your phone company and get the number blocked from there.  If they say they can't, then tell them you'll start forwarding the calls to their support line.

Bill, type 'tech support scammers' into YouTube, there's a lot of people having fun with those idiots.

A freind of mine had one of them on for about half an hour before they reliased they were being scammed back. "Yes, I think you are right, my computer does have a problem, its taking an aweful long time to boot" etc. He figured he was stopping them from getting to someone who would fall for it as well as having fun in the process.

There's a guy on YouTube 'lewistech' who seems to have made it his mission to annoy as many of them as he can. I watched one vid where a scammer asked him if he was using 'Windows 9'!!

What's fun is to play along with them if you have the time to waste.  Act like you're following their directions..... but you're not.... and tell them whatever they're trying to have you do "just isn't working".  They will waste lots of time with you trying to get the computer to do what they want.....which is to gain access to it.... and you have it disconnected from the internet or phone line so they can't get in......   "yes I clicked on that and it didn't work"........  "No it's not working now either"....

Prank the scammer.

Extortion implies that the extortionist is in a position to damage you if you fail to do as he wants. This caller apparently has nothing to damage you with. Social engineering is the easiest way to break into a computer, but it is not at all clear that this particular scammer had that as a goal. Likely this guy is more interested in getting your credit card number than access to your computer, by offering to sell you something he does not have to sell. He may have access to a list of subscribers to some kind of computer support service and is offering a renewal using a hard sell, or he may just be assuming that you have a computer, like the "Microsoft Support" callers who constantly call to tell you they have found something wrong with your computer, or the emails from banks you have no account with which tell you you need to change your password for your nonexistent account. They are just playing the odds, without any special knowledge about you. Hanging up is an eloquent response to someone trying to sell you something you do not want.
