PT 11 is announced today. There are huge improvements. 64 bit performance, new audio engine and playing/editing HD video formats..

I've heard that PT is

1. not stable (reliable) on Windows
2. doesn't allow users to change keybindings

True?

So Sonar needs a HUGE update to keep eyes on it. I think just fixing bugs is not enough for that right now. We also need new and unique features.

I'd rather want improvements in, or completion of, half-baked features such as take lanes, simple instrument tracks, color options than new, unique, eye-catching half-baked features.

No issues here with PT asides from the AWFUL install DAE issues on Win 8.

From what I hear with PT11 you still cant freeze tracks which I find amusing.

Also PT11 is going to be VERY expensive, probably even for someone (like me) who has PT10.

I hear tho they have really improved the video engine which might change the way I work more in terms of using PT much more for Sound Designig films and the like.

Eh Sonar IS 64 bit (and has been since Sonar  7 (I think, maybe earlier)..... It's Avid who are late...

+1    I don't believe SONAR needs many new and unique features to compete in DAW-land, rather it needs to solidfy the features it already has (or had).   One of the only things I can think of that SONAR has never had in any fashion, and that I would personally like, is Varispeed.   But outside of that I'd really have to think hard about brand new features that would outweigh refinement of existing features.

Just got an email from Sweetwater about version 11 and it included upgrade info. Honestly, I prefer many things about SONAR, too many to want to upgrade. The only reason I have version 9 of PT was to be able to migrate projects from some of the studios that still use it as a main DAW. As for X1B, didn't someone mention that it would be out for Musikmesse this month, or at least announced?

I know there's probably some killer features with PT11, maybe some major things that Sonar doesn't do, but the list of features it adds to PT11 listed in the Sweetwater email are mostly already there in Sonar (at least on the surface).

PT's biggest benefit as far as I can tell is it's universally accepted deployments in almost all major studios worldwide, and the huge desks you can buy for it. Other than that and PT having the better FX chain display (IMO), Sonar is better for users like us, me thinks.

br, ya know what else drives me crazy about PT? When I import an older project created with version 6 or 7 from the studio where I track occasionally, it will reset the preferences on my version PT....meaning the program stops talking to my audio hardware unless I delete the preferences file and let PT rebuild itself. Not a clue why this happens, I would love to ask Digidesign but that would cost me my first born male child with their asinine customer support.

Here is the thing for me....I love Sonar and hate Protools (so Far).

But, I every project I work on gets sent out and mixed in PTools.  I export an OMF and the guys i work with have a version of PTools that loads and places everything beautifully.  But why not just work in Ptools send a Protools session?

Protools notation is a lite version of Sibelius.  I would much rather be able to work in Score view and not Piano View.  Score view seems to be on its way to the curb with Sonar.

I'll be interested to see how Protools in Windows handles video.  We all know the trouble Sonar has with video.

I owe it to my self to check out the new version Protools.  I hate to jump DAWs, but if Sonar does not want to work with notation or video i might have to.

Oh man, you're killing me.  " Score view seems to be on its way to the curb with Sonar." - don't even think it - I hope the bakers are at least going to address some lingering strangeness in SV since it's move to X1/2.

Re:  PT 11, I hear you, and since you are sending your stuff to PT users, it makes sense for you,  but there is no way I can scrounge up enough money to move to PT 11, let alone the fact that they are moving from RTAS to AAX (you can forget you VSTi's - there is no one even allowed to market a VST AAX wrapper).

I hope that we see X2b announced or released during Musikmesse, but not at the cost of rushing it out the door, and with fixes, not just new features.

Jimbo, in my experience Sonar handles OMF's just fine....

The myriad of software platforms dictates the errors....i.e what VT software it comes from and what settings....

Video on the other hand.....well......yes...this is well documentated and very poor in Sonar.
