I am new to all of this technology, that being said I am just trying to assign sounds to each side of a single split keyboard.  I was using the FM8 synth as a sound source and have the keyboard (Novation Impulse 61) split at middle C with the lower register set to midi channel 1 and the upper set to midi channel 2.  However, I cannot figure out how to set two sound patches to different channels within FM8.  I even tried two instances on seperate tracks, but then I could only use one at a time depending on which track was selected.  I am using the Simple Instrument track type and am thinking using midi tracks pointing to an SI track may be part of the solution.   I'm sure I'm just doing some newbie thing.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

I am not an FM8 user, is it even multi-timbral? I would expect it not to be, since isn't it a DX7 emulation? The DX7 wasn't multi-timbral IIRC. If that's the case, you may need to insert two instances of the synth.

Click the input echo on both tracks to play both at once.

Also you don't need to split the novation keyboard, you can just add a midi filter to the fx bin on each track so that each track only responds to certain keys.
