I'm relatively new to midi so this may be a basic task. I wrote a part for violins and I want to change to violas, so I am group selecting, lassoing, the notes above the violas range with the intent of dragging them down to the violas range. Problem is, random notes outside of the lasso are selected. I've searched for something to affect the behavior and can't find it so I figured it was time to ask. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wish I had a good answer but I really don't.
all I can say is to just make sure the notes you are selecting are darker in color and to not touch any notes at all with the lasso box.

Thanks Charlie. It's like they're somehow linked to each other because the same notes outside the lasso always get selected. The notes within the lasso get selected as usual.

I would avoid moving the notes. Just change the key by an octave up or down.

This is a simple thing to do in the track inspector using the key widget. 

Thanks John, that would solve the whole lasso problem but I don't want to change all of the notes just the ones out of the viola's range. And there are many, otherwise I'd just start moving them individually. Plus I want to understand what I did to cause it in case it happens again.

You mean it only happens occasionally? Did you try the same thing in another project using a different VSTi?

if the track is split in to clips make sure the clip isn't selected in the track view or every note in that clip will move, again this might be something you already knew about.

It seems to only be on this midi track with EWQLSO. Charlie I just checked that and it isn't selected in track view. In the meantime I've decided to scuttle the viola idea and just keep the violins. Thanks all for taking the time to help.

Are they on different Midi channels?

If so you can select them via Edit > Select > By Filter

Sadly I think this is a bug. I've had it happen and I either just lasso the notes again and hope for the best or if that doesn't work I hold Control and click on the notes that should not have been selected (this deselects them while leaving the original selections active). It doesn't happen often but when it does it's definitely a pain. There are other selection issues in X2 like this involving clips. It's the only major bug I've encountered and I hope it gets fixed.
