  • X1d Displays only very short Midi Text Events

I've noticed that X1d does not display many midi text events depending on their length.  The text event is listed in the event list view but the text is not shown.  MIDI text events can hold text strings with hundreds of characters but X1d will only display short text strings.  If you double click the apparently empty text field the text shows up but disappears as soon as you move away from the field.  Furthermore, it appears that X1d stops accepting text at about 128 characters.

Here's a link to a screenshot of several text fields.  In each, the addition of one more character will make the field disappear.  Note that the max length differs based on how much room a character takes.

This is a bit of a pain for me because I have a lot of projects made from SHS7 that have long text events.

Comments?

Just for fun I checked out MIDI Lyric Events.  They are handled much worse than Text events.

The textual argument for a Lyric event is terminated when a space or "-" is entered (they are both legal Lyric characters).  There may be other characters that do the same thing too.  So you can't have a lyric event that says "Hey-Hey" or "Hey Hey" for example.  And the length allowed is a lot less than text events.

Oh well.... At least I'm not concerned about Lyrics, just Text Events.

Well, Maybe Lyrics are handled OK.  The official midi spec says one word or syllable.
Back to Text Events:

As an example, I've used text events in a project to display the song's chords so that I can ad lib more accurately.  Following are two links showing the exact same project opened with SHS7 and with X1d.  The X1d text events are useless since many of them are blank and others are truncated.

Link to Event List view from SHS7 - this is how it should look:

I like to use text events because the event list view can be positioned so nicely and does not get overlaid by the track view, for example, when the track view is brought forward.  Also, in X1d the event list view can be docked in the Multi-Dock (I think that is what it is called).  The Project Info could be used to hold this kind of data but it get easily hidden and can't be docked.

Anyone got a suggestion on how to do what I want in X1d?

PS:  I assume the links I've provided work - let me know if they don't.  I'm a DropBox newbie.

The dropbox links work.

I love your idea of the chords in the event list. I always used markers for them (chords), but it gets really crowded really fast. I hope there's a solution to your issue, because I want to use that idea, too!

(You can, of course, put chord symbols in the Staff View, but at least in my experience, Staff View isn't consistent in when it will show the next measure, so sometimes I see the upcoming chords, sometimes I see the chords I just _should have_ been playing.)

Maybe you'd better send a problem report to the support folks?

I have created a problem report for this issue.  Many may not see this issue as important but it's a functional regression since this issue does not exist in SHS7 and ProAudio9.  In my 40+ years of experience in operating systems development, function regressions are almost the highest priority since they can make a product useless to the customers.

The wheels turn ever so slowly..... My problem report (submitted in Sept of 2012) advanced to "Under Investigation" and then to "Submitted to Development" a few days ago. I guess that means someone thinks it's an actual problem! I don't know what priority they think it is but since it's a functional regression it should be high even though it doesn't cause projects to blow up or BSODs or ..... --Larry
