I hope you are all learning something from my tragedy.

Routine periodic full disk backups - was doing that already.

Offsite storage of said backups - this is what I am taking away from this tragedy.

I am so sorry to hear this news Dave. I don't know what else to say. I hope you are okay...

Just curious if you have checked with the police to see if they have made any progress (stay on them to try to get them to do something)?

That's a bit concerning about needing receipts now.  While in the past they have requested receipts if I had them, they did not require them. Luckily, it's been some years since I had to go through that process though.

I have left voicemail messages and sent emails to the local PD. They have not responded. Next step, I guess, is to march into the police station and make a nuisance of myself. I haven't done that yet because I don't want to come across as a crank. But dammit, this past week I HAVE been feeling extremely cranky. And I'm old enough to get away with it.

Sure, they've got more important things to do than chase down my SONAR projects. But sheesh, I showed them where the crooks live, showed them the evidence. You'd think they'd deal with it just to add an easy win to their scorecard.

Now the insurance company is a whole 'nother source of frustration. I've been dutifully paying my premiums for 40 years. Now, for them to demand receipts for everything is effectively saying thanks for all the money, now f*ck off. It doesn't look like I'll be able to find a receipt for the most-expensive items on the list, my studio monitors.

Cranky, indeed.

I have heard it said that often taking just one crim off the streets can reduce a town's crime rate by a major amount as most of the crime is committed by the same small group of people. So you would think going for the easy one would really pay off. They catch them for one thing and many others come to light. If US law enforcement is driven by statistics, targets and metrics like it is in the UK you would think this would gee them up a bit.

In English law a defendant can ask "for other crimes to be taken into consideration" when being tried, it’s not uncommon to see reports where there a very large number of these. They have to be the same type of offence, they escape prosecution for the offences but they are considered in sentencing saving an awful lot of time for the courts.

After all the frustration and runaround you have been though Dave , now may be the time to call up your local news station too give them a nice investigative story for their consideration

A glimmer of light...my insurance company says they will accept my estimates in lieu of receipts. They will apply depreciation, but I can submit receipts for the replacement gear and they'll cover the difference. So I am no longer bad-mouthing USAA...at least not yet. And I'll now go ahead and pay my premium, which just happens to be sitting here on my desk.

Tomorrow I'll go to the police station and try to interest someone - anyone - in my case.

In other good news, I got my security camera working again. Turns out their software was not compatible with 64-bit operating systems, but I was able to find third-party software that worked.

Next up, replacing my door. Unfortunately, it's an odd size that had to be special-ordered and will take 18 days to arrive. In the meantime the first of my replacement gear will have arrived, so I will be sleeping with it as suggested by Craig.

Glad you're getting some cooperation from USAA, Dave. They've been pretty reliable in my (limited) experience. Your misfortune prompted me to update my inventory list/pictures, etc. I've been putting it off for way too long. . . .

Good to hear about the insurance. That is the same process they had me do. I listed all the model#'s and the serials I had, along with the estimates, and then submitted receipts for equipment that was replaced.

As someone said, perhaps the police are acting but just keeping it quiet. At least, I hope so...

Dave I'm so sorry to hear about this.

I can only imagine the devastation you're feeling and I just hope they catch the goddam scumbags!

Gear is gear and can be replaced with relative ease, but to lose all your project data. Ah, it doesn't bear thinking about.

It's certainly focussed my mind on my own security/backup arrangements.

There's probably not a lot I can do from 4.5k miles away, but if there's anything at all, please don't hesitate to give me a shout.
