  • Adding a drum crash cymbal in piano roll?

So, I have a drum sequence that I like. Created it in SD, have in a track in Sonar.  At the end of one of the clips, before it moves onto the next drum clip, I wanted to add a crash in the piano roll.  I was able to do it, but the volume is really low in comparison to the other drums.  What setting on that individual midi note ( cymbal crash ) do I need to be looking at to increase it's volume?  I've set the velocity to 127.

For grins I thought I would see if maybe somehow the SD drum track was being treated separately than that one cymbal crash so i got back into the SD interface, turned the drums down hoping that by reducing the drum volume, the single crash would then stick out... Thinking maybe that it was being controlled differently because it was not part of the original SD kit and midi sequence... But, that didn't make any difference.

Hi Red, just hover with your cursor over the note and you get an arrow.  Now you can click and drag upwards and that changes the volume of that one note.

Really? You don't mean velocity, do you? The velocity is already at 127, says OP. Velocity is not the same as volume.

Rick, it sounds to me like all of your drums are appearing on one audio channel in sonar, is this correct? (I'm not talking about the Midi track - just the audio track)

If this is the case you need to split them out so you have a separate audio track for kick/snare/hat etc.

Then you can apply normal techniques (fader/gain/compression etc) for balancing a given kit piece with the rest of the kit

Hi Bristol..

So, I have a drum folder, a midi track along with a track that shows a midi icon on top of a keyboard.  What kind of track is that?   Which I'm assuming in the audio track for the midi data... Yes?   Which it seems as though I had seen somewhere that you could show the wave data in that track, but I can't recall how to get it to show up.

Anyway... In UK speak.... BLOODY HELL.

I'm using some purchased presets I bought from Toontrack on these drums. I like the sound a lot and it's made my life easier.  Everything has already been mixed, compressed, EQd, bussed and output.  Yes, I know I know... It's the cheezy easy way out of mixing drums.  But I'm not putting out radio ready material... For now, anything I do is for myself.

I guess I could always find a crash cymbal wav file and being it into the project and place it right where I want it.

Is SD Superior Drummer or Session Drummer?

Not that it really matters.

Question is, how did you get it loaded in Sonar?

If it's Session Drummer, you should try going Insert Soft Synth > Session Drummer.

Then make sure you don't select Simple Instrument Track, use the split audio/midi options.

The important part is to "Enable All Mono Outputs"

This will give you an audio track for each kit piece in SD. These will show up in Sonar and you can tweak them as much as you want.

If you're talking about Superior Drummer then individual drums sounds can be controlled one by one in the mixer section of SD.  You can also apply SD f/x to each drum sound to tailor your drum kit.  Even if everything is on one channel, you still have individual control over each element.  Using different channels for each element of the kit can give you even more control.

Just for reference

Sorry all, thought I mentioned it.  This is Toontrack's Superior Drummer 2.  Coming out of SD2 is a single track.

Charlie, love the video, I did do it as you had suggested. The problem is, it's just not loud enough. I want that cymbal crash to be very prominent.

Bristal, I'll try what you suggested later. At work right now.

The cymbals in SD2 are controlled in the SD mixer by the room mic.  In order to increase the cymbals without increasing the overall volume of the kit, you need to adjust the bleed on the room mic to just pick up the cymbal.
