Thought I would share what I do to workaround latency in that it might help someone else's workflow. I export a WAV of the entire mix that I want to add something to and start a new project with that backing track. When I get done with what I want I just export a WAV of the performance into the original project and line it up. Keeps things moving ;-)

It is a good tip Eric. You don't even have to start a new session either. Just run the mixdown on a stereo track even within the same session and just turn all the other tracks off. (bypass all the plugins on those tracks and busses, easy to do in Sonar too) That is actually better because you are still keeping everything contained with one session only, less confusion.

I have used this technique, too, with good results. The only draw-back is: you MUST be completely happy with your mixed tracks, since you will be locked into them at at that point (unless you do as Jeff suggests and keep everything in the same project; then you could mute the mix track and resume tweaking the full mix with the added track(s). Good tip!
