Hello forum,
I'm having a problem in Sonar X1. When I close a file (leaving the program open) and choose a new file, Sonar crashes. It will also crash if I try to have two files open at once, even though I have that option set up in preferences to allow multiple files to be open.

Anyone have that problem? Or know what could cause it? Sonar 8 never seemed to do that.

Thanks
FD

Run a memory test, disk scan and a full virus scan.

If you are not running X1d, you might want to download and apply the update.

Also, make sure your Windows version is up to current maintenance levels.

You may also consider checking for any driver updates that may be out there, and also, please add your Windows version, and whether or not Sonar is 32-bit or 64-bit, to the signature on your forum profile.

whats your set up, IE: where is sonar nstalled, where are projects installed ?
I see you have 3 HD's
1SSD and 2 one TB HD's

lets see where you are configuring your OS, Sonar, files, project files, and that may reveal something.

Also, if you have antivirus software running when you are doing audio processing with Sonar, try temporarily turning off the antivirus software just while running Sonar (turn it back on when done), and see if that helps.

Also, if using a USB audio interface, try making sure it is in a USB 2.0 port, and not USB 3.

Hey all, thanks for the replies! I think this is resolved but I'll put the details in case it helps anyone else.

Sorry for the lack of info:
- 64 bit windows 8 (updated), 64 bit sonar (I also have 32 bit sonar installed but don't use it much) both X1d versions
- All programs installed to the SSD
- All audio/session files and soft synth libraries kept on the 1st STA drive (the other SATA is just storage)
- mem test passed
- no viruses and disks are clean. It's a pretty new machine

I did have a USB iLock in a USB 3 port but moved it to test (didn't help)
I removed an external USB 3 drive (didn't help)

Solving factor: I disabled Windows Defender and the problem seemed to disappear BUT only when I shut off the full program as administrator and set it to not start on boot up. In other words if I just stop the service the problem was intermittent. When it's fully stopped as a startup item the problem seems to go away. I can open multiple files etc. like the old days.

* I'd rather not use win defender anyways as I find running spybot, Hijackthis etc. seems to keep everything pretty clean.
I wonder if it's safe to assume that if I'm not browsing the web I could keep it turned off? What are the popular A/V apps for DAW machines?

Thanks again folks!

**Update**

The problem still persists. Windows Defender is turned off but now the crashes have returned.  It seemed to stop for a while, hence my last post.
Any other ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks muchly!

I use Avast - it's free and pretty well ranked for antivirus software.

I wish I had more ideas of what to have you look at.

I am a bit fried at the moment, I will circle back to this thread in a bit and see if I can come up with something more helpful.

Hang in there,

I DID take a look at the drivers for the interface, and while the actual drivers download page does NOT list Windows 8 as a supported OS, here is what MOTU says about it on another page (I added a font color change to the relevant text, and made it bold and underlined):
