I use Avast - it's free and pretty well ranked for antivirus software.

I wish I had more ideas of what to have you look at.

I am a bit fried at the moment, I will circle back to this thread in a bit and see if I can come up with something more helpful.

Hang in there,

Bob Bone

so don't I,
if we could only make more people see how awesome Avast is, very light perfect for DAW/internet browsing.
smart people think a like :)

Thanks again. I too suspect the MOTU drivers as they haven't been updated on their site since September of 2012 I believe.

I have a tech query posted with MOTU, I'll see what they say and get back. I have a feeling these problems are happening on Windows 8 and not Win 7.

Motu are usually quite good with timely updates but this one is taking a while.

I will check out Avast, thanks!

>> When I close a file (leaving the program open) and choose a new file, Sonar crashes.

Just to throw another data point into the mix: This is happening to me also on Windows 7 64, with SONAR X2a.

I don't run an antivirus on my DAW, and anyway, I doubt that was it. This seems to be something new for me since the original X2 release (I never used X1).

Same here.  X2 is very prone to crashing.  Usually when I close or open a file.  Very unstable as was X1.

Thanks for the posts..

Interesting to see others with a similar issue. To hear this issue is also happening in win 7 throws a curve. I was suspecting win 8/sonar or win 8/motu as a possible culprit. I've been suspecting the motu sound card and waiting for answers from them. A tech said he would test on his own version of sonar earlier today and get back.

(PS. I tried Sonar X2 and am dying to use it but there was a bug turning softsynths on and off. Whenever I would connect a synth's power or turn the synth's power off it would hang, the ram indicator would go nuts for about 14 seconds and then: either crash, or everything fine. I had a post on the forum recently about it: http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2769982 never resolved it, even testing on another win 8 machine. I heard there was an X2a out now but haven't tried to see if that problem went away. I actually stayed on X1 for that reason. I wish I could change to X2)

Don't mean to go off subject this post though, just the only issues I've encountered with Sonar/Win 8 so far. Perhaps related.

Lastly, I'll add that I think asio drivers were possibly a commen factor to both problems.
Thanks again!

Maybe on your equipment. I can't remember the last time it crashed on my computer.

I seem to remember where X2a addresses something like 250 bugs - perhaps it is worth looking at getting to.  I have it running on Win 8 and I have not had a single crash.  (certainly others have differing success/failure - so I think configuration/use/system play a part in it all).

It's obviously a subtle thing. X2 was solid - I only started experiencing the "open a second project = crash" after I upgraded to X2a.

Please excuse me as I have just started reading this thread...

But I thought I should start off by saying that my system has auto-reported a similar situation a number of times now...

It doesn't seem to always be the same songs involved tho it's difficult to be certain... and most of my projects these days are using only Sonar supplied plugins... When I use something questionable (I use SpinnerLE (leslie simulator) in a number of projects) I freeze the track any time it has been edited... So it's never live when I open any of these songs... I also still use the Lexicon Pantheon very often, but then it would level out to being a problem for all my songs as it's in every song... ;-)

Now to read more of the thread...

Hi Gang...

[edit]

BTW... I too use Avast, but only on my web machine (this machine)... I have no virus software on my DAW as it's only web activity is DAW based (authorizations and such)...

never any solution's, just dogging sonar any chance you get, that gets a little old after awhile.
theres a lot of people including myself that have had good success with both x1 and x2.
while x1 was very rocky to begin with, your not about to tell us after x1 D you still found it unusable ?
that's a joke.
even if it had issues, its still not unusable.
and x2 has been a success I think, a few quirks sure, unsuable ? give me a break.

the people asking for help on these threads are not employees of sonar, so you might want to help out once in a while.
these people need help, not your personal problems with sonar and "this is unusable".
even the people who don't like x2, they may say its buggy, I wont aurgue with that,
unusable? no,  you might want to check your computer and upgrade some drivers or something if you cant even use it at all.

I wouldn't even say anything but this is always your reply to everything, never helping, just complaining.
its understandable to complain once in awhile, but every post ?
not helping anyone.
