I think I heard discussed the capability of some plugin to generate a midi track from audio, particularly an audio bass line. Was this a fancy one like Melodyne or will V-Vocal do it? Or is it something from waves? I can't remember. Anyone?

Yes, V-Vocal has an audio-to-MIDI feature. Once V-Vocal has analyzed the audio, you can drag the Pitch To MIDI icon from the V-Vocal interface into a MIDI track. This will automatically create a MIDI clip containing the analyzed audio notes as MIDI notes.

If V-Vocal doesn't "see" the bass line, try bringing up the level (use a compressor / limiter to avoid clipping if needed). If that still doesn't work because the pitch is too low, then play your line an octave up. Once it's in MIDI, you can easily transpose it back.
