Am I supposed to be able to save an audio and midi track together to be played in windows media player. I seem to be able to save or export only the midi or audio track, not both together. Thanks to anyone who can offer advice.

also, I want to save the file to my vs100 to add further tracks. Should I be able to do this?

When you export a project the midi tracks will be converted to audio , the exported file should sound just like the project. But you must have used a soft synth in the project to be able to hear the song properly. 

thank you for your reply. I am using a simple midi keyboard. I guess that's why I don't hear the keyboard in the wav file. Do soft synths come as keyboards?

If you want to hear the sounds from the MIDI keyboard, then you need insert an audio track, arm it by pressing the R button, then hit record and it will playback the MIDI track on your keyboard and record the audio output from the keyboard onto the audio track (assuming you have the audio output from the keyboard going into the soundcard). 


If you want to use sounds other than the ones in the MIDI keyboard, you can use a softsynth. Then all you have to do is CTRL-A to select all of the tracks and file export and it will mix all the tracks into a single WAV file that you can play with Windows Media Player.

You are totally not understanding how this works. I'll give you a breif instruction, but you should read the tutorials as well, Sonar is not a program you turn on and use without learning a LOT first. 

Audio is recorded to an audio track. Audio is recorded as a wave file can be listened to after it was recorded. 
MIDI is recorded to a MIDI track. You cannot hear a midi track as it is just data, it has no sound. It is then used to PLAY a synth. 
The easiest way to do this is insert a soft synth , try the TTS-1 for starters as it's a GM synth. 
Then you will hear your keyboards midi output and can create a whole band drums and all. The sound of the TTS-1 will be exported along with any audio tracks as a wave file. 

There is a lot more than what I have typed here so you will need to read the help files and follow those instructions step by step.

There's 2 different processes for saving files in Sonar: 

1) When you create a project, you can use a combination of audio tracks and MIDI tracks and you save them to a Cakewalk Project file (.cwp). The .cwp file can only be used by Sonar and it contains all of your settings and recordings. (This is like editing a file in Microsoft Word. The DOC file contains all the formatting information (mostly hidden). It can only be read in Microsoft Word.) 

2) To save your project as an audio file (WAV) that can be played on Windows Media Player and burned to a CD, you have to use File-Export. Sonar will then mix all of the tracks together into a standard WAV file that can be played on any computer or burned to a CD.  (This is like saving or printing the Microsoft Word file to a PDF file or a printer that anyone can read.)

After you've done it once, you will have an "Aha!" moment and it will all make sense. The first time is the hardest. 

Thank you very much cactus. I was able to use tti to record my keyboard over my audio track. When I saved it as wav, I heard both. You are a terrific teacher.
