Have you got the 48v phantom power turned on? If the AT2020 is a condenser mic, you'll need phantom on for it to work.

Can you get it to work with a line level signal?  Will it output from sonar?

I have little knowledge of what to do.  as far as I knew from what ive read, I should have been able to plug it in and record. I cane from a music studio app on my iphone, and this blows me away as far as the things I am able to do, but its frustrating to not be able to record anything outside of my mic build in to the laptop itself.  if there is a youtube tutorial on how to set this up that would be great.

It is a condenser mic.  You DO need phantom power turned on to give enough power to drive the mic's signal to be hot enough to be picked up by the interface.

Have you tried the mic elsewhere to verify it works? Same for the mic cable?

For the audio track you want to use the mic with, you have to specify the input for the input port you plugged the mic into on your interface, and you also have to click on 'Input Echo On' for that audio track, to monitor the mic input.

This is also assuming you have the audio interface drivers specified in Preferences - if you do not then Sonar will have no idea that you have an audio interface.

Please post back with results as you try things - it is frustrating, but you are new to it, and there is unfortunately going to be a learning curve.  FORTUNATELY, once you get things up and running, you will be very happy.
