Hi.

I'm just setting up a new computer and finally installed X2 and have started to get things working and the latest problem is this:

When I transfer an audio clip from Sonar into Sound Forge (through the Utilities menu) the clip shows up fine but when I try to play it there is no sound.

I can play audio in Chrome and from Windows Media Player during this test (while all these programs are open) (as well as Sonar, obviously) but not from Sound Forge.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that when Sonar is closed the audio in Sound Forge works fine.

In the Sonar Preferences "Share Drivers With Other Programs" is turned on. 

The Computer is brand new Intel i7-3770 3.4ghz, 16gb RAM with a 128gb Crucial SSD as the system drive and a 256gb Crucial SSD for the project files plus 2 more SATA drives for storage.

Windows 7 Pro SP1 64bit

Sound card is an Emu 1212m. 

Any ideas?

Does your system also have a built-in sound card? If so, use that for Windows and Sound Forge. And use the Emu exclusively for SONAR. That may clear up the problem.

What are your playback settings in Sound Forges preferences?

Microsoft sound mapper should let you share no problem, thats what mine is set to.

Windows will NOT allow the use of one Audio driver for more than one application. Scott's suggestion is valid, if the device using the inbuilt card has no latency needs.

Another alternative is to use the ASIO drivers for your main app, and then use the inbuilt (Windows 7 +) WASAPI drivers. These give very comparable latency figures to ASIO. You can run ASIO and WASAPI concurrently :) albeit that WASAPI is a bit "flaky" under pressure!! No need to install, it is already in the W7 OS.

Thanks markyzno. That worked. ... for playing sound. But now I have no input when recording in Sound Forge.

Windows DOES allow more than one application at a time to use the audio drivers. At this very moment I have Sonar, Windows Media Player and Chrome all playing different audio files at the same time through the output of the 1212m. It's only Sound Forge that isn't working (unless I switch to the Microsoft Sound Mapper).

Not to mention that it worked fine before in XP with Sonar X1 and the same version of Sound Forge (10, various builds). It seems obvious that Sonar 2 is simply not allowing Sound Forge to use the driver, yet will allow other apps to use it.

This is either a bug or there is just one more tiny setting somewhere I haven't found yet!

No probs Scott -  More than one application at a time was not exactly what I meant ...but you got it going with on, I thought that Sound Forge only working via the "system default" soundcard may have given you a clue, not to worry so moving on.....good luck. I am sure you will figure it eventually :)

I was pretty upset earlier when it took full control of my synths and wouldn't let me do anything with the front panels but eventually I found the problem. And after watching some of the tutorial video and recording a very short song I am MUCH happier. 

I also just downloaded the patch so maybe that will help somethings too.

Although I will say that after I finished I went back and deleted a track and the program crashed! Good thing I saved before I did that! 

Anyway, I'm sure all things will get resolved. I was pretty unhappy with X1 at first too but ended up (mostly) loving it so I suspect I'll get used to this one too! 

Fixed it! In an unexpected way. 

I was having another problem with sound forge. I couldn't zoom in and out with the scroll wheel any more with my microsoft wireless mouse. Seems to be a known issue. So I got a new mouse, a logitech wireless. It fixed the zooming problem in sound forge. Great!

But just... because...(because I have 23 years of experience figuring out computer problems, and often they are very unexpected) I decided to try this issue again. And suddenly now when I open an audio clip in sound forge from the utilities menu in Sonar X2 (leaving Sonar open) the sound works perfectly!! 

So I guess it was the wireless microsoft mouse all along. VERY unexpected, but glad it's fixed.

I've also had strange behaviour from my wireless mouse and only Sonar, fixed now.
