1. make new midi track int Inspector
2.Select Output-GM Drums complete set.
3.View, piano roll
Does not give me a drum map, but only the regular keyboard view.
What am i missing?

Do you have the midi track selected?  Right click on the track pane clip section (where your recorded data is displayed), and then click on View>Piano Roll from that drop-down.

I just followed your steps exactly, other than the way I chose to view the piano roll (as I described above).

This worked fine for me - give that a shot and post back.

Glenn, this one threw me at first.
Unlike previous versions, X1 does not simply replace the PRV keys with your drum map. The map is an additional screen in the PRV.
See step 4D in Charlies link. You need to drag the keyboard view down to reveal the drum map.
Just grab the top, drag it down, and you should see your GM map in all its glory.

In this case it was dumber than usual.
I did not start with a soft synth.
I started with page 123 of Scott G's book, (dealing with Drum Tracks, using Drum Maps)
I followed the instructions as above in my post.

The missing step on this page (and probably assumed) was the part about actually installing a synth first!!
Lol & Duhh.
Then, when the (rather dim) light came on, I installed a synth and it didn't work either due to letting it (Session Drummer) install separate tracks for the instruments (All Outputs) instead of just the one for all instruments combined.(First output).
With the "First Output" and after choosing a Program, of course the drum map appeared automatically
I'm good to go on this one at least. 
I will eventually settle down to one method. 
I'm one of those guys who always wonder if there's a better way.
I'm just trying them all to see which I prefer.
1.My Audio drumming, (Epic fail), 
2.midi keyboard entry, check, 
3.Midi drum machine entry, check, 
4.Audio drum machine, check, 
5.Midi input thru my midi guitar set to drums,check,
6.smart loops cut and paste, check, 
7 Step sequencer & PRV by hand, today is the day!.
So many choices, so little time.

ha.. your not the only one that's happen to, I responded to a post a month or so ago about someone doing the same thing in that book.

the book is awesome, anyone you talk to will say the same.
its just a funny coincidence that person too was working from the book and did the same thing.

the link I posted is just (to me anyway) a real easy way to understand it.

Sorry for any confusion. The strange thing is that the steps work fine here. I'm using SONAR X2a. Create a new project, create a new MIDI track, assign its output to General MIDI drum map, open in PRV, and I get the drum grid, no problem. Hmmm... weird.

This shouldn't make the slightest difference.


This is the Audio side of the equation, not the Midi - and it's the Midi that the drum map references.


FWIW, I always, without fail, insert a drum synth with "All Outputs" selected and never have any problems with my drum maps.

I agree with Bristol,
never encountered such issues, and  on times I have had 3-4 separate drum VSTi all with multi outputs, the map assigning Is all based on midi. But the whole area here with drum mapping and then your audio out/sub routing can be awkward to understand if a newbie to this area of sonar, it does take  a little getting used too. It only takes one oversight and sonar can be really unforgiving when troubleshooting if you are new to that part of sonar, In the case of mapping drums and multi audio outputs more so, so I recommend too follow all instruction from the start again, as suppose to trying to figure out where you went wrong, it took me many days weeks etc going over stuff from the start to understand it all together/make it routine, and thus understand where I went wrong whilst setting up, Where I cant say you don't have some weird bug, more than likely its  a silly little oversight, hence in that drum map Pdf I made sure it stated some really obvious things that here easy to overlook and is all the difference in the outcome or what you think you cant see, but will be their, or maybe just say reselecting the correct drum map again in your console midi output dropdown selection box, sonar does have  a few little annoying quirks, and again the other one being your drum map may be out of view and you may still need to drag the midi piano roll down to reveal it as has been mentioned again by Robert B.
Regarding Audio/sub outputs You can also just drop in your multi vsti, but only select first synth audio output as suppose to all' but you can still go on to add in more synth audio outputs later, you just have to understand the process and that  each work in harmony together :drum maps for the midi data & synth audio outputs/subs, but you still need to treat these as two separate areas when setting up or trouble shooting, Its more often than not one silly little oversight, we have all made when learning.
