First let me say hello everyone. First time user on your forum, so if I mess up on protocol please correct me but be gentle. Also I'm a serious newbee to Sonar X2 Studio and computer recording in general.
I have a hp laptop Elitebook 8740w with windows 7 and I am using the sound card that comes with it. I looked under the device manager but it just says "High Definition Audio Device". I have a Yamaha motif es6 connected to it with a USB cable.
 
I've tried to record some midi from my keyboard and the notes do appear in the track. When I play it back the timing on the notes are all over the place. I've zoomed in and watched the notes as they pass and it seems that they are recorded out of time. Almost like they are jumping to the nearest whole note while recording. (Not quite but it's the best example I can give)
I've searched the help file and this forum, but I really don't know what I'm searching for.  
 
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Fact- You need to purchase a proper audio interface to work without issues in any DAW software. On board cards may work , but with issues like your describing. 
$ 10 sound cards and $500 software do not match. 

I think I recall something called input quantizing. It's where sonar will try to align your midi input to certain beats and measures as it's recording midi notes.  If the input quantizing is set to something large like hole notes, then any 1/8 or 1/4 notes would probably align to the hole not.

Check that out... See if you have input quantizing set too high.  If so, set it down to something like 1/16 notes, or what ever yo need.
