Please, is there someone in this group who can explain the "exact step by step" process of converting each of 5 midi tracks (ie) bass, piano, strings, altosax, and drums, simultaneously to 5 separate audio tracks in Sonar X2.

I have read the literature on bouncing tracks but just cant seem to get it. Yes I can end up with a stereo audio mix of the all 5 tracks combined, but I want the tracks to be 5 separate audio tracks that I can carefully add effects that cannot be added to "midi" tracks and then mix down to a master.
I would really appreciate this very much.

  1. Select all required tracks
  2. Select "Bounce to tracks"
  3. In dialogue change "source category" to "Tracks"
  4. Set format as required (Mono/Stereo/etc)
  5. Set "Dithering" to none.
  6. Check required "Mix Enables"
  7. Click on ok

Karl,
Thanks so much for your quick response. Unfortunetly after following your step by step instruction I still end up with 1 Stereo mixdown of all the midi tracks rather than 5 separate newly rendered "audio" tracks.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

If they are set up in one synth.  Try freezing the synth first.  This will render the tracks to audio, then highlight and do as Karl described.

Yes, Mike has a point there. I assumed that there is a separate associated audio track for each MIDI track. If it's a single synth with a single output you will only get one track.

If it has multiple outputs or multiple synths post #2 should result in separate tracks.

It's quite conceivable that this will need to be done in 2 passes - one for all your Mono tracks and the other for all your Stereo tracks.

I used to do this all the time with BFD - the Stereo tracks being Overheads & Room, and Mono for all the dry kit pieces.

But, freezing the synth as suggested above will do this automatically for you.

Hi Jim... I have a feeling that the problem is you're outputting those MIDI tracks through one stereo synth output, correct? If so, then you have to use the Bounce To Track feature multiple times... once for each MIDI track that you want to convert.

SONAR only bounces audio tracks and each MIDI track would need to have it's own audio output track in order to bounce or freeze them all at once and produce individual tracks. The way around this is to setup your synth to use multiple outputs when you first insert it into a project, but not all synths provide this feature.

So the answer to your current problem is using the Bounce To Track function for each MIDI track you want to convert.

Many Thanks, however I dont understand how to Freeze the Synth.
I have 5 midi tracks how do I get separate associated audio tracks for each midi track.
Would that have something to do with creating an instrument track?
Also I'm using cakewalk tts-1 as my inserted soft synth. When I put in my raw midi tracks I insert the Cakewalk TTS-1 synth and then change the output of each track to play thru the TTS-1, on occasion I get an option of playing thru TTS-1 and TTS-1 2 which I dont understand.
Also I dont understand the insert soft synth options dialog box.

I am really trying to understand this, I bought the X2 Video printed out the X2 Guide and of course accessed this forum. I apoligize for being so dense however I am very knowledgeable with Computers, (I built my own) Pro Audio Systems etc. I'm 67 and I'm just not as fast as I used to be. All help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Jim,

Check out this video for some basic information on using software synths in SONAR. It talks about the DreamStation, but the procedures for inserting synths, etc. can be applied to the TTS-1 and others...
