Shark007 codecs
John

I use Shark007 codecs and can load any video into X2. Just be sure you have the 64 bit ones.
Like I say John, doing video production for a living, I have to be up to date on codecs...it must be something else I've either doing wrong or screwed up somehow...I don't get the unsupported format error (well except for the little .mov I just tried) just no video or audio....think about it, I obviously have the supported formats installed or I wouldn't be able to generate them in Vegas.
When you say you can load any video in X2, does that include HD (ie 1080p mp4)?

.mov files don't currently work in the 64Bit version of Sonar.
This is due to a QuickTime issue that hasn't been resolved by Apple.
Some DAW software apps (Cubase, Reaper, Studio One 2, etc) have provided a workaround until the issue is resolved.  It would be nice if Cakewalk found the time to do this...

Many of us are straddling the audio/video worlds... and this would save time/effort.

FWIW, I've had good luck with .wmf files (HD) in Sonar.

Vegas has its own codecs built in. Sonar does not. It uses windows system codecs.

Let me be clear I can play all video file format with X2 with the codecs I mentioned including HD mov files. This is on a 64 bit Windows 8 system running X2 64 bit. Others talked about Klite for doing the same thing.

You don't have to take my word for it you could try it out for yourself.

Yeah, I have to agree with John. I use the K-Lite codec pack now, and I haven't run into anything I can't open in Sonar so far. I had all of the usual problems with QT, MP4, etc., before I installed the codecs. Sonar will pretty much use whatever you have installed on your system.

Not true. I'm currently working on a project and the video is an MOV.

Jim is partially right!

.MOV is not working as a video export format, but you can read it IIRC.

Cheers !

I said it before, I will say it again,

I think Cakewalk should make the video player as a "standalone" tool, just like Logic is actually using Quicktime to play video.

They could do a simple external media player that reads timecode from Sonar, then this thread could be 32, 64 bit.. doesn't matter. Also it would not make Sonar Lag like it does right now, makes it more painful that we deserve to do work for picture on Sonar.

Cheers !

Sonar is very fussy about video formats. I find that it really likes AVI JPEG's that I converted using a free converter called Wondershare. Sadly, Sonar X2 is not very friendly when it comes to working with video. I've been a Cake guy since 1992, and can't understand why they never put more effort into this. Even worse is trying to export the video with the synced audio...TERRIBLE. For these reasons, I have switched over to Mac running Logic Pro. Why? It totally rocks for scoring to picture, and I can count on it every time. I now have my PC running as a slave (hosts all my big orchestral libraries), and have still Sonar loaded for when I occassionally need it. I didn't want to jump ship, but had no choice.

Hey Jscomposer !

I too have a mac with logic pro for some scoring gigs ...

While the video management is wonderful compared to Sonar,
the workflow is so bad.. that in the end, I think I prefer dealing with the issues of Sonar,
rather than the ones from Logic.

As for re-exporting the video with audio, I do it in Microsoft Movie maker now, it takes 2 clicks,
and it works wonder. and it's free..

Now If I could find that codec+settings that would make Sonar snappier when dealing with video ...

Cheers !
