  • Show stopper X1 bugs?

This thread is for those that are unable to use X1. Its fine to post if you are not having problems too. But please say why you think its working for you.

There seems to be two user types on the X1 forum. Those that are using X1 just fine and those that have not been able to get it to work for them. I would like to know what is causing the problem for those that can't use it? I've read so many posts that say it doesn't work which is simply too vague for hashing out the causes.

A detailed explanation would go a long way in me understanding what is the cause of the stoppage.  I would really like to hear from those that have reverted back to Sonar 8.5.3 in order to get work done.  But those that are still using it with some issues please explain what they are.

Please post your system specs plus any unusual or not so common plugins; that might might be helpful.

The idea here is to try to fine a common cause for what clearly is a very problematic situation for us all.  Why am I able to use it and others are not?

I hope this will not turn into a rant thread because that will get us nowhere.

My system specs are as follows

Gigabyte MB GA-EP45-UD3P
Intel Q6600 processor
8 GB of 1066 DDR2 ram matched.
Nvida 8600GT video card with 512 MB of DDR2 vid RAM
Vista Ultimate 64 bit w/ SP 2 fully updated
Edirol M-16DX audio mixer and interface USB 2
2X Cakewalk USB MIDI UM-3G
5 HDs of various sizes some removable 500GB to1TB.
Sonar X1a Producer
GPO
GTR 4 full
Kontakt  4
Ozone 4
Voxengo stuff. Not all though
Fabfilter stuff not all though.
Nomad Factory Studio Channel SC-226
Lots more plugins
Mackie Control

I do music for video sometimes and use Sony Vegas Pro 9 for that with Sonar for the music. These are my productions for organizations I work with and for.
I use Sonar for a lot of things in audio. Some for myself some for others. Mostly for others though.

I have run across a few bugs but as a whole not that many and none that prevent me from using X1.

BTW I am able to load all my old projects in X1. Many are very old. The only problem is plugins I no longer have gone missing in the project. LOL

But I do now have solid replacements for all of them.

Sounds like you're talking to me John.

I've been back on 8.5.3 for about 6 weeks now, after finally giving in with X1 and completely removing it from my system.

This is going to sound vague, but I simply could not get anything done in X1 due to the constant crashing - no warning, just crashing back to the desktop even after attempting the simplest of tasks - selecting a track, scrolling in track view, inserting a plug, that sort of thing.

Initially, even whe X1 had been completely removed (including Registry tweaks) 8.5.3 was also showing signs of very strange behaviour (can't remember the details now) so I had no choice but to uninstall 8.5.3 and re-install. Sinvce then, 8.5.3 has been 100% stable - not a single crash and  in that time, I've been doing some intense editing, adding numerous live, un-bounced V-Vocal clips.

The only non-bundled plugs I've been using are BFD2, T-Racks Singles, EWQLSO, Halion 3 (not very project), and a couple from DSK.

I WANT X1 to work - I think the interface is superb and can't wait to try out the Pro Channel etc.

The Maillard Reaction

Inability to roundtrip Pro Channel through v8.5 without losing all ProChannel settings

Snap to grid flakiness.

Audio Snap inoperable.

Loss of track count in track view.

Garish appearance of info in the tattoo parlor themed track inspector... with the caveat that I used to be able to get all the track inspection info I needed in a right click menu that used the Windows gui design and colors.

General lack of enthusiasm fostered by the amalgamation of all the bad ideas presented as Skylight.

Everything I do takes longer and few extra steps in X1.

v8.5 works pretty darn good in comparison... so I'll stick with it for a while.

Pro Channel turning on and off randomly.

Random disappearance of waveform drawings.

General lack of confidence in stability of product... even though it has never crashed on my robust and perfect system.

Thanks for asking.

Bristol, thanks for the reply. You seem to be using XP and I guess its the 32 bit version?

I have noticed a few others that are running XP and seem to have crashes with X1. I don't know at this point if that is significant or not.

Hopefully others will have a similar set up and have the same symptoms.

I am not sure what you mean here. Why is 8.5 being used with PC at all? As far as I know and this has been a long standing advice from CW is don't run a project started in a newer version of Sonar and use any unique features from the new version that are not in the old version. This can cause all sorts of problems.

Now please don't think I am chiding you because I am not. We need to try to get at the reasons we see such different experiences with X1.

Mike I don't think you have the sort of issues I am talking about. Issues that are real problems. Things that can't be avoided or a work around found.

I do understanding the loss of how it was and the long learning time that went into working with Sonar in a fast and productive way.  That is fully understandable. I wish there could be a better way to transition for you.

Mike thanks for the report. It is helpful.

This may not be a show stopper for most but it sent me back to 8.5. There's an issue when selecting multiple clips by "lassoing" them, if the selected clips overlap other clips it also selects the overlap section of the clip not intended for selection and also doesn't highlight the whole clip that is intended to be selected. Hopefully fixed in X1b

I see Twisted.  I guess you can't wait for X1b? I believe it will be fixed in that patch. At least one can hope, right?

Actually John I CAN wait as long as it's fixed, till then I wasn't foolish enough to remove 8.5

Yep.

XP32 patched to SP3

I remember talking to one use on here who had virtually an identical setup to my own, yet his X1 ran perfectly.

So on that basis, there's no immediate correlation, and anyway, the product is SUPPOSED to run on XP32, though I suspect it's optimised for Win 7

I just wanted to say I am one of those running XP SP3 32 bit without any problems other than known bugs. I don't believe it's an XP specific issue, it's possibly hardware related (I'm not suggesting your hardware is at fault, I'm more inclined to believe X1 was simply not tested on enough motherboard/cpu/video combinations)
