I was just telling a friend not to worry about trying to figure out how to monitor with effects and then realized maybe I should ask you folks.  I've resigned myself to just hearing the dry stuff that I get from dialing the mix on my interface.  Way too much latency in my system to monitor thru the 'puter.

But what do you guys get going?  What if I just wanna hear some 'verb on my vocals or guitar takes?  I think I've seen some interfaces with built-in effects.  Is that the way we go?  Or is there some way to get super low latency?

Your machine is not a monster, but you should be able to find a reverb that will work without too much latency. Avoid any "mastering" plugs or anything with a look ahead buffer. If there is too much latency to monitor a dry return through the computer, something is probably set wrong.

IO|2 works well for me on this so long as I avoid some specific plug-ins and synths with a lot slower machine than you are using.

With your processing speed you should be able to monitor with lots of effects loaded. Have you reduced your latency settings on your audio device?

I had a big battle early on trying to get io2 to do glitch-free playback, so I'm probably using pretty high buffer settings.  I just thought maybe that was an artifact of moving to USB2 from my old Firewire mAudio.

Even with the mAudio, which had pretty tight latency, I could still discern a pretty apreciable delay, 40-80ms, which made monitoring thru the computer unusable.

But you folks are saying I should be able to trim that down? gcolbert, care to share you audio setup for that io2?

Thanks.

2ms - can you set it there? For input monitoring that's what I use. No discernable latency at all.

There is a speed difference in the transfer protocols in practice, but it would not introduce significant latency.

I am also having some latency problems that I think I should not have.  Tracking "dry" is not very inspiring.
Here are my setting....is this too much latency?

Input:                  2.7 msec.    117 samples
Output:               12.3 msec    544 samples
Total Rountrip:    15.0 msec    661 samples

That's roughly equivalent to standing fifteen feet away from your amp.

15 ms would certainly be workable.  I'm in the hundreds right now and hesitant to go mucking around with audio settings again now that I'm finally able to work glitch-free.  I had much tighter round trip with the mAudio.  Again, if gcolbert could share his io2 setup, that might give me the confidence to fiddle.

Thanks.
