EMU 0404 USB, 1820m, Windows 8, and Sonar, Reaper,... Much Joy

win 8 32 was only listing 16 bit drivers
win 8 64 was not finding the device
 
Kept getting a "file not found" error when trying to install from the program files folder.
Use the USB beta driver: http://connect.creativelabs.com/emu/default.aspx
 
Click on Beta Driver, download the file.
 
I opened the exe file with 7 zip
 
copied the files in the audio\drivers folder
(  C:\TempC\EMUU_PCAppDrv_US_1_40_00_BETA extracted\Audio\Drivers\driver  )
 
to the program files folder
( win 8 32  C:\Program Files\Creative Professional\Program\driver  )
( win 8 64  C:\Program Files (x86)\Creative Professional\Program\driver  )
 
 and I was happy.

Way fewer Sonar/computer freezes, and other weirdnesses.
 

Good news indeed!

Generally, when changing operating systems it is a GREAT habit to make sure that there are drivers available for any device such as an audio interface.  I have seen quite a few posts over the years where someone buys a new computer, with the latest and greatest operating system, only to find out that their audio interface will not function properly on that version.  MANY companies take up to and exceeding a year to create drivers for new versions of Windows, so it is prudent to do the homework prior to changing to the new OS.  This is also true when switching from 32-bit to 64-bit.

Nonetheless, it is a happy day that you got it all to work on your system.

I provide computer support for a bunch of small companies. So, I am an early adopter.

Got 9 computers in the office/house.

The music computer is a triple boot box; win 7 32, 64, and win 8 64.

Just this week installed w8-64 on a laptop.  Hence the interest in getting the 0404 usb working.

Found the bit about the 1820 on some forum.

I recommend ALWAYS to NOT replace everything at once. As in: do not uninstall previous versions of Sonar when installing the latest version.

And for win 8 and audio computers, install on new partition for testing and configuration.

And so on.

As near as I can find the newest drivers for the EMU 0404 USB are Windows 7 Beta. I do not expect them to ever do a finished Windows 8 or later driver. Looks like much of the old EMU line is being abandoned. In the words of the new overlords (Creative) classified as "end of service life."

Shouldn't this be the other way round? 32 bit drivers should go to (x86) folder?

The "program files" folder is for a 32 install.
The "program files (x86)" is for a 64 bit install

Using the BETA drivers for both the 0404 and the 1820.

Er, no, its the other way round.

x86 is for 32 bits, so the c\:Program Files is for 64bit files.

Your 64bit version of X2 will install into the above by default. So should other 64 bit programmes and also drivers. 

At the end of the day does it matter, as long as Windows knows where to find the required files ? Moot point that someone more talented than me can perhaps answer.......

Well, regardless of where they are sitting on your computer, Program Files is the intended folder for 64-bit programs, and Program Files (x86) is intended to be used for 32-bit programs.  You have it backwards.

To be way clear:

The EMU driver is 32 bits. Hence the installer places the files in the correct folder determined by the bit level of the OS as you have described.

So, we are both correct.
