Quick question...

When I have a choice of plug ins on my PC - same plugin at either 32 bit or 64 bit - why do some of them work great in 32 bit only, some work well in 64 bit only?

32 bit plugins are handled by a container called "bitbridge" which allows them
to run in the 64 bit environment.  There is also a container called "Jbridge"
which you can purchase, and, from opinions, seems to work better.

All your 64 bit plugins should operate within the 64 host very well as
there is effectively no difference between the 32 and 64 bit plugins,
other then the bandwidth at which they function, meaning the 64 bit
plugins will handle memory better and should function better in this regards...
but "sonicly" there is no "audible" difference.

I should note, when using 32 bit plugins, the container usually become
the "problem" that makes them "less stable", and why they tend to
crash and burn...

I have never been able to use 32 bit plugins on my 64 bit, starting with Windows 7 through Windows 10 comp with any stability. So I never even consider it any more. EVAH!

Just to add to Larry's very thorough response....

Some plugins offer both VST2 and VST3 versions, and there have been reports of problems with some VST3 plugins (while the VST2 version works fine).  Once reported, these issues are usually fixed pretty quickly with an update, but it's something to be aware of.
Bottom line:
- Make sure you have the latest version of your plugins.
- If you have problems with a VST3 plugin, try the VST2 version.  Report any issues here so others can help verify/troubleshoot.

I still have some 32 bit plug ins I use on a regular basis - to echo Larry's thoughts, Jbridge is far more stable for this - in fact totally stable for me on 64bit win 7, latest version Sonar Platinum

I read somewhere that bitbridge and jbridge will add some latency too.

I have been using Jbridge for a long time and I can't really say I've ever noticed any latency issues
Cheers

Really?  That hasn't been my experience (at least not *noticeable* latency), and I've used both.
