Yes - We were honesty and had buyed a few licenses from SONAR, because it was installed on 14 computers. But they are now all livetime. So we don't needed to pay for updates. Now - after a long test with Cubase - we buy 3 Cubase Pro and 11 for the small Cubase elements. But only if our test is succesful.

SONAR was too cheap. Livetime update and then installing on many computers.
Steinberg Cubase needs a Dongle for every computer, and every update has to be payed - for EVERY computer I use. When I use Cubase on 3 computer - at the same time - I have to pay 3 licences and 3 x updates.
I would have payed also for SONAR - because I earn my money working with SONAR. I also pay 60$ per month to Adobe.

That is a huge load of crap. It's good to know which DAW I will absolutely avoid if I have to switch one day.

I only use Sonar on 2 computers. Both are mine. One is my studio machine and the other is my work machine. I spend more time at my work machine of course, so I like to mix and all of that good stuff from the work PC. Mostly just record in the studio.

I can't imagine having to pay twice for that.

You don't have to pay twice for that.   Cakewalk expects and allows you to use Sonar on your work machine OR your personal machine. If you want to use it on both at the same time then you were expected to buy two licences.

Cubase licence is on a dongle. Install Cubase on both machines then whichever you're working on, put the dongle in...

OK, it wasn't MY lifetime, but I got more than my money's worth already. I was about 8 months into the first 12-month subscription (full price) when the lifetime offer was made. So, I didn't have to make the last four installment payments ($200) and paid for the lifetime instead ($100). I still came out way ahead.

My concern is for the f'd over employees and their ability to pay their bills. And to smile.

A lot of people bashed me about staying on X1.  This is a case in which I wish I had been wrong.  I hate to see people lose money.

I was wondering when we'd hear from you, Jerry. Curious as to your plans. I know you briefly looked at Reaper. My guess is you'll head to Cubase. That would be a good fit for you. I thought about it, but I don't think I qualify for the crossgrade, as i only have 8.5. which is only right i suppose.

I'll be reinstalling Digital Performer but will continue to use Sonar until the hardware and/or software doesn't support it anymore. Cubase's ergonomics do not appeal to me. I am playing around with Reaper. DP is the DAW most like Sonar so that's most likely the DAW I will end up using.

Jerry

I had forgotten about DP. Didn't you try it before, and thought that that the score editor was limited in some way?

so as long as the promised self activation key is delivered then I won't lose too much sleep over it.

Yes, I do like the score editor in Sonar better but within a few years Sonar will not be supported by either hardware and the operating system.

DP is definitely the closest DAW to Sonar in terms of ergonomics and workflow so until a new DAW is created that I like better I'll use DP. I may even come to liking it as much as I do Sonar.

I wonder if there is any chance that some Sonar developers will start their own company & continue to develop, support & sell Sonar?
