Hi

Ok, so I am having problems with softsynths.

I usually just drag them across from the browser onto the tracks.

If I have about 4 in there at once the midi keyboard starts to play all of the soft synths at once and not just the one of the particular track I am on, so I get rapture, bass and drums all being triggered from my keyboard.

Or for instance, my keyboard is triggering the bass sound but I am on the drum track.

If I save and restart sonar it all works fine but after a bit it all starts to mess up again.

Any help is appreciated please.

Look to see which tracks have got Input Echo enabled.

Thanks, I am quite new to sonar. I used cubasis for a couple of years.

What exactly does input echo do?

Plus.....

When I am dragging the synths across from the browser, I just drop them on to an empty space and not on an actual audio track.

Can I just use them like this or do I need to create a separate midi track for each synth.

By default, Sonar will automatically enable the input echo on functionality, as you select a given midi track.

When you select a different midi track, Sonar will disable the first midi track's input echo on, and will then turn it on for the newly-selected midi track.  Please note that if you had manually turned input echo on for any midi track that Sonar will then NOT automatically turn it off for that track.  (you would have to manually turn it off for any such midi track where you had manually enabled input echo on).
If you are hearing multiple midi tracks playing, it is most likely that you have multiple input echo on buttons lit.  Try either manually turning the undesired ones off by clicking on each input echo on button so that it is not lit, or just click with your mouse to select the track that you actually want to hear the midi for, and Sonar will as I stated earlier turn off the input echo on for the non-selected tracks and will end up with input echo on for only the track you just selected.  Again, Sonar will not auto disable input echo on for any midi track that you had manually enabled it.

Sorry for any confusion generated by my woeful explanation above.  I have some pretty good pain meds going and have not had any coffee yet.

I find the best way is to use the "Insert Soft Synth" option form the main menu

This will create the necessary Audio & Midi tracks for you.

There is an option to use either "Simple Instrument" tracks (which combine the Midi & Audio into one track, or to use "Split" Audio/Midi - most users prefer the latter option.

You should really spend some time working your way through the tutorials as well as watching some online videos, of which there are hundreds.

Shut off the input on the midi track in the inspector.

I stopped using omni and switched my keyboard midi output to a specific midi channel number.  I did this several years ago. I chose the channel #6 at random.

Now as I work on a midi track I need to set the track midi INPUT channel to that specific number. If not, it doesn't see the keyboard. When I finish and move to the next synth in the project I simply click NONE for the input to the old track and set the new track to my synth's output channel. BTW... it only takes a few seconds extra to click on the fields needed to do this.

By doing it that way, I hear the previous tracks play back what I recorded and the new track is the only one playing the live synth stuff.....

isn't there a setting so only the active midi track will play? That's how it works for me because I always set the midi imput to omni. Only the active track plays. I thought I saw the setting once browsing the preferences. Could be in the midi playback area.

+1 ...I have done this as well...I found using omni all the time caused all sorts of weird things to go on when using multiple synths.
