• SONAR
  • Sample Rate Mysteriously Changed Mid Project...

I opened a project I have been working on today and was greeted with the following message:

I found this odd, so I opened a different project, no problems (all was as I have always set projects up).  I got to looking around for anything that could have possibly changed and found this in the transport module.  Note the bit rate.

I have always recorded at 44.1.  Haven't experimented with changing it, nothing.  I know where to make the change if I ever wanted to, but haven't touched it.  What on earth could make a project switch sample rates like that?

For now I will switch my driver over to 48, but this is very strange.

Thanks for any insight...

Hi Jeremy . . . welcome to the forum !
For more accurate insights we would need to know more about your system specs and soundcard / driver type.

If I understand you correctly, your project sample rate changed "somehow" from 44.1 to 48 ?
You say, you got this message when you opened (but not started) the project today.
In Preferences - Audio - driver settings
. . . what do you have the sample rate setting set for in  "default settings for new projects" ?

Hi, thanks for the reply!

My system specs are as follows:
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700  @ 2.66GHz
  • 8G DDR2
  • Roland Octa-Capture (software version 1.5), ASIO driver
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti
  • Win7 SP1 64
  • Sonar X1d
  • ASUSTeK Motherboard
My default sample rate for new projects is 44100.  My Octa-Capture is also set to 44.1.  The message popped up on a project I had already done a ton of work on a few weeks ago.  I opened it up to do some tweaks and it wouldn't play back.  I started a new project, no problem.  I opened up projects prior and since with no issues.  Then I found that the problem project was set to 48k.

I have been using Sonar since version 5 (all producer editions) and have never had a problem like this crop up.  Quite the head scratcher...

**UPDATE**
I disabled the octa-capture in the windows audio settings and was then able to change the Sample rate so I could at least play the project.  I still don't understand how this one project got tweaked.  Is there a way to convert it back down to 44.1 without much hassle?  For now, I will just leave a note to switch the audio settings for this one project.

If your system has a built-in soundcard, use that for Windows and use the Octa-Capture strictly for SONAR. Then you won't have anything messing with the audio interface drivers or settings.

Good Morning Scott,

That is a good tip.  Do you know of a way to prevent Windows from enabling the Octa-Capture in the sound settings?  Once I disabled the octa-capture in the windows sound I was able to actually tweak the settings.  But as soon as I did, windows re-enabled all the inputs and outputs.  The whole time I have the internal card set as default device.

This may be what caused the whole issue to arise.  From time to time, I will use the Octa-Capture to record "what you hear" (from say the internet or something) because my internal soundcard lost its ability to do that as soon as I upgraded to Windows 7.  The internal card is an Audigy 4,  but I don't use it for recording.

Hi Jeremy,

Hmm... I'm not sure. If you set Windows to the internal card, it should leave the Octa-Capture alone. That's how I have my system setup... Windows uses the internal card and SONAR uses the V-Studio 700.

I will have more time this weekend to mess with it.  I shall report back if I find anything out about this issue.  Thanks for adding your thoughts to the issue.

I think I have tracked down the issue, or at least how to navigate around it.  I was using Audio Creator to create a one off audio grab I described above.  I began thinking about it and my thoughts are that I should be able to use my preferred audio device for whatever I deem necessary for the task at hand.  Armed with that conviction, I set about trying to do just that -whatever I was trying to do.

If you allow windows to monitor the Octa-Capture's main outputs, you need to make sure you disable this feature before going back to Sonar.  By doing this, I was able to get the driver to change the sample rate.

As to the sample rate change mid project, the only thing I have found that could have done this lies in the area of the windows sound device properties under the advanced tab.  There, under default format the  2 channel, 16 bit, 48K (DVD Quality) was selected.

Could this setting have been enabled on the Octa-Capture as well?  And if so, could it have overridden the default settings in Sonar for new projects?

At the end of the day, maybe the problem was a PICNIC error and I just forgot that I made the change at some point.  Who knows.  Regardless of how the issue was introduced, I have found a satisfactory resolution and want to extend my thanks to you guys for responding to my initial query.

Let me know if I need to further elaborate on this solution.

Cheers!
