Hi all, I'm working on a song demo project in Sonar, and I have 2 tracks recorded: one is a Step Sequencer loop, and the other is an acoustic guitar track. Whenever I adjust the tempo up or down, the guitar track doesn't follow the drum loop track. But when I set it back to the original tempo, it's fine. I got a really good acoustic guitar performance on this one track, and I don't want to have to scrap, should I decide to change the tempo of the overall song. please help :) -ryan

Hi Ryan,

Try this...
1. Select the guitar track.
2. Choose Views > AudioSnap Palette (or press A).
3. In the AudioSnap palette, click the Enable/Disable AudioSnap button.
4. Click the Clip Follows Project button.

If you change the tempo, the guitar track should change along with it.

Scott, thanks for the tip. I'll try that. Also, does Autosnap help for moving clips along the timeline and sync'ing them to each other? So far, if I needed to do that I've been moving the whole clip with the mouse, and that's really hard to get to line up right. -ryan

"Snap to grid" is the setting that can help (or sometimes hinder) with lining clips up when moving them. Turn it on or off by pressing N and adjust the resolution via the "Snap to" module in the Control Bar.

4. Click the Clip Follows Project button.

IMPORTANT! Be sure to click the drop down to the right of this option, and set the mode to Auto Stretch before enabling it. Otherwise SONAR will automatically snap the clip's tempo map to the project's timeline in addition to enabling auto stretch, which is likely to have undesirable consequences.

Also, be aware that stretching audio more than a few percent on something "fragile" like an acoustic guitar part is likely to produce more audible artifacts than most critical listeners would tolerate, even after rendering with the appropriate offline stretching algorithm (see Render Mode section of the Audiosnap Palette).

I'm still not getting it right. I have Autosnap enabled, and I've try to snap to Beat, and Clip, both and it still doesn't work. I'd attach a screenshot but I don't think this forum allows it.

If all you want to do is have audio follow tempo changes going forward, you don't want to have Beat, Measure or Clip selected when you enable Clip Follows Project; you want Auto stretch mode, as mentioned.

To link a screeenshot, you first need to post it on a photo-sharing site that you can reference.

Looks right. After selecting the Auto stretch mode, click the Clip Follows Project button, and nothing should happen until you enter a new tempo. Even then, you won't see any change in the audio rendering because M:B:T timeline is fixed visual reference in SONAR, and changing tempo just alters the speed of the Now time cursor. But you should hear the change on playback, and the audio should remain in sync with the MIDI.

The Auto Stretch option, should be selected by default, which is why I didn't mention it earlier. If it's not, then yes, select that option, as Dave mentioned.

Best,
Scott
