  • Cool idea for a portable digital control surface

Being new to this, I'm not sure if Sonar can do this or not.  Seems cool though. At least in my humble opinion.
Imagine having the ability to work in a client server type sitation with Sonar.  You have Sonar installed on your computer. It has all it's normal functionality. Mouse, keyboard, existing touch functionality... Everything it does today, it still does.

Now, lets say you have a lenovo, dell, (what ever brand) touch screen device. Wouldn't it be cool if you could install a digital version of a control workspace?  Imagine having the V-Studio 700 on your touch device.  Now, imagine if it was wireless and you could walk around the room with it. You could control Sonar from 20 feet away, maybe you need to walk over to the guitarist and see what he's hearing or what ever... Or maybe you just wanted to be able to step back further from your monitors and be able to tweak FX or volumes...

I dunno... From my humble opinion, I think it would be really slick.

Why interpose something, an extra layer, when the touch ability will do it directly to Sonar?

It's not imposing. The idea here would be no more imposing than someone having a physical control surface. You can use it, nor not use it. It would simply be an extra feature.  Also, some people may not want to use a small touch device to run sonar for what ever reason that may be.

Ok, take sonar completely out of the picture.  Just imagine some 3rd party company creating a software app that was a touch screen control surface that you install on your device that could control any DAW.  Sonar, Reaper, Pro Tools, ect...   Maybe that's a better way to look at it.

There are many ways aldeady available to skin this cat.

Install Splashtop on your smartphone, iPad or Android tablet. install splashtop client on your PC or laptop and you get full wireless emulation and control of your Windows desktop and obviously any program running on it.

I don't think splashtop can do what I'm talking about.  Splashtop looks more like a way to get access to your files and what not.  Or to remote into your computer.  That is a different situation than what I'm talking about.

I think you miss the point. A touch screen can control a DAW. The screen is the control surface. X2a is setup to be controlled this way. If you want remote control Mudgel has the answer. Windows 8 gives one this ability.

What you are doing is putting a layer of code in the control of the DAW that is unnecessary. A virtual control surface to control a virtual DAW that could be controlled with touch directly.  See this video.

If it's the remote function you want, will TouchDAW do it?  Have't used it myself yet.

Yes, I know Sonar is already touch screen enabled. I fully understand that.  In fact, I have it loaded up on my Lenovo Thinkpad Twist, which is running Windows 8, which is also a touch screen device.

This would not be adding a layer of extra software. This would not run in the same space as ( pick your daw ).  This would be a totaly different application, no different than a physical hardware control surface. Only this one would be software based.

The reason it would be cool is not everyone wants to work on a small touch screen device and not everyone can afford one of those mongo sized screen as shown in that video. Maybe people still like having a PC yet still have a touch screen device of some sort in their home.

I think it would be slick.

Well (insert bad word)... Yes, that looks very much like what I'm talking about!  And I was just thinking to myself, rather than sit here and talk about it, just go do it.   Now having said that, i wasn't really thinking about having it be so versitle that it would run on a phone, rather at least target a smaller full sized touch devices.  Working on a phone like that would seem more cumborsome that it's worth... Very cool though..
