All above is true-,anyway I 'd just like to chime in,and say I think most of the ole 32bit Studio Instruments ARE GREAT,especially, what they "can" sound like, and hope they don't dump them anytime soon.
The only one,I thought was a tad meh,was the electric piano, but that appraisal,is coming from a guitar player,so no biggie.
Coming into Sonar/computers of "any kind",a little under 2 years ago, Studio Instruments, was and is a total gas,and so easy to use[the GUI's] of a LOT of the other brands, are way more complicated-my Komplete "Abbey Road" 60's Drums, will ONLY show the "kick drum" in the mixer,no matter, how much hair I remove from my scalp!,and some of "it" is expensive stuff, and a little over-rated,compared to the instant jamming rock/pop/funk band vibe of Studio Instruments.
Cheers
Bob
P.S.To the OP,a USB MIDI controller, even a cheapie, like my M-Audio Key-Rig 49,is totally faultless, and necessarry to record MIDI playing, unless you want to trigger synths via MIDI patterns, but both is viable.
