There are several techniques to make close-mic'd recordings sound more spatial. This is one that I haven't seen mentioned earlier:
Use a very, very sort convolution reverb (think 50-100 ms) on, e.g., Perfect Space and pan it from center to left to right to center one or two times. Use the volume envelope to fade out and the HP and LP filters to taste.
This gives you a wider, short-widening-delay-like sound compared to the ultra short reverb without the panning trick.
