You need to use a software synthesizer to produce sound for the MIDI file. This video might help get you started with using software synthesizers... You can use the TTS-1 instead of the DreamStation mentioned...

Well if you do not know what the word "Pan" means,, you have a long long road ahead of you. You seem a little upset with the terminology of audio and MIDI recording. Pan is much easier to place on a mixer than "this here knob makes the sound move right or left in the stereo field" I'm afraid that using DAW software is not like playing a video game. It takes effort on the users behalf to learn how it all works. As everyone has mentioned because they can all tell you haven't done it yet, Read the endless information and watch the videos... over and over. It will take time.

spending endless boring puzzling days struggling with software is not my idea of a nice time.
i just have ONE problem - import a MIDI file and change it and export it.
how do i do that on a win7/64 laptop with sonar studio XI
the tutorials do not appear to cover that
thanks

What are you trying to achieve in the long run?

If you want to play back a MIDI file, then perhaps Sonar is the wrong program for you.

If you want to enter the world of recording/composing/producing music with a computer, you have a steep learning curve ahead.  Perhaps watch some of the videos on Cake site if you can't sit through the twenty second add on Scott's site.
Good luck.

  IMO easiest way.
Start Sonar > Go to " insert"> choose "soft synth" select "CW TTS-1".
Select the midi track by clicking on the blank midi track, then go to "File" import midi select your midi.. Everything should be set in TTS automatically except BPM. You can adjust that in the project.

+1 here - this is an easy way to get the imported midi to play.

To the original poster: You indicated that you want to change some of the midi content.  To do that with Sonar, you can read the manual, like we all did.

People here in the forum bend over backwards to assist folks with issues - but there is an expectancy in that person also putting effort into resolution of a given issue.  You clearly don't seem interested in putting any effort into this, expecting people to do your work for you, and that is not likely to happen.
