I'm one of those that also has a problem downloading from cakewalk. Actually it's not just cakewalk, it's anybody that hosts on amazon's servers. It starts off great, then immediately slows down to dial-up speeds and usually either just stops responding or disconnects.

I love to find out why only some of us have a problem. Is it ISP throttling? Area hand-off Routing problems?

Anyway, my ISP is ATT and I'm in CA. Who's your ISP and where you located?

I have a kikass Internet connection at the studio where I work,
I got producer's files in under 15 mins ...;)

BUT

both my X1 studio, X2 studio, AND X2 producer downloads ALL gave me error messages at install (it still ends up working in the end) .. stuff like Registry server crashing and VB 2008 stuff crashing during installation ...

I think you did great by ordering DVD's ... I'm not sure that downloading such huge files is so great when it comes to file reliability ...

Still 40$ is a lot of money for a licence you already paid for ... (but that's another topic).

Cheers !

When X2 first came out I tried to download using IE. Epic fail: estimated DL time was over > 5 hours (I cancelled it after 5 minutes) for 1 file. So I picked a different browser (Chrome) and restarted. Everything worked out fine. All of this was on the first day of release so the servers were, no doubt, busy.

If you are using IE you may want to try a different browser.

You still have to download the X2a patch which is 530 Mb
and all the other updates and freebies.

According to the guy at Cakewalk customer service,  if your time limit expires during a download, you will have to start that download over again.

That's actually incorrect. The 300 minute limit only prevents you from STARTING the download again after 300 minutes. It helps prevent file sharing/piracy. If it takes longer then 300 minutes, it will not stop your download in the middle of the process.

FWIW, the files aren't hosted on our servers, they're served up by Amazon Cloudfront. If you're being limited to ~ 90 kbps it could potentially be your ISP, AV software, or a browser setting. Definitely give Chrome or Firefox a test if you haven't done so already.

EDIT: Also, for clarification, if your links time out just log out of your account and then back in. New links will be generated with new 300 minute windows.

Yeah, it was just going to take too long.  I'll still try at 4am to see what happens, but I don't have the luxury of babysitting it for what could be a couple of days.

I am using Google Chrome on a nice clean super fast computer; Intel(R) Core i7-3930k, 3.2 GHZ with 16 GB ram.  My internet connection is 30 Mbps.  The slowest I've seen it run on the download test is about 20.

The $99 upgrade special was from something I got in the mail.  But I think if you just go to the Cakewalk store it's the same price; I'm upgrading from 8.5.3.

Mike,

thanks but I've tried them all and all the download managers. The only time I have problems is when download files are hosted on the amazon server farm. It's like I'm sitting in a rain shadow for amazon servers.

It took me over a week and at least 30 tries before I was able to successfully download x2a and then it took 12 hrs. I can download the same amount from europe in 1 hrs. (actually don't remember the exact time but wasn't good).

Like I say, it's not just cakewalk but any company that hosts their large downloads on amazon servers. And enough others have reported similiar problems that it makes me wonder if there are certain parts of the country where this occurs the most.

+1 Exactly what I did ^^^^^^^

It seems that if you lose the download for even a fraction of a second with IE that's it, you have to start again. With Chrome (and Firefox for that matter), the download manager always seems to 'know' exactly where you are in a download. I've had my internet go down for a few minutes before now in the middle of downloading something, and Chrome just carries on as if nothing has happened once the connection is re-established.

I downloaded mine through my cell phone as a hotspot.  IIRC it took less than two hours for all four files.  I also used that FreeDownloadManager program which really seemed to speed up the download.

tKx5050: For what it's worth: my comment was not directed at you. Many of the above posts related to user experiences DL'g files. I simply related mine and how I solved the issue for me...and made a recommendation based on that.

Note that my experiences were also on the Amazon servers which generally speaking perform quite well for me. I had a problem and I found a solution that worked for me. Please note that I have no ax to grind against IE (Microsoft).

On the other hand, I wouldn't let AT&T wipe the mud off my shoes.
