  • Latency settings within Sonar?

Just bought and connected a M-Audio USB MIDI adapter to my computer and Sonar recognizes it and plays it back but there is about a two second delay in one of the piano mods.

Anyone know where I can change the latency?

A TWO second delay? I'm far from being an expert but that sounds like something other than a problem with latency. Latency is usually measured in milliseconds. I could be wrong, of course. Maybe if you gave us some information about your equipment we could offer some advice.

What Audio Interface are you using? Soundcard? The Integrated Sound device built into your computer? External Audio Interface? What recording mode are you using? ASIO? MME? WDM/KS? What operating system are you using?

Are you using the Microsoft GS Wavetable as a Midi Device?

If you could post screencaps of EVERY tab in your Options>Audio window that would help a LOT. There are so many factors involved that a lot of time is usually wasted just trying to communicate how the options are configured. Being able to see these options, while taking a little time to capture and upload screencaps, can actually save a lot of time and get faster and more specific suggestions.

The amount of delay also makes me suspect a midi data loop. What Piano Mod are you using that results in this kind of delay? Are you using a Simple Instrument Track or separate Midi and Audio tracks for the soft synth?

Maybe two seconds is a little overreacting .

I don't know much about my audio settings on my computer, I know I have Realtek HD Audio and I'm running Windows XP with 2 gigs of ram  if that tells you anything about my computer.

Could this be the problem?

I'm using the basic piano mod that comes with Sonar 8.5 Studio and I'm trying to record a simple MIDI track with only a MIDI track displayed in the overall mix.

I'm not using the Microsoft GS Wavetable as a Midi Device. I have a M-Audio MIDI adapter that's connected straight to my computer by USB.

Sorry but I'm terribly naive when it comes to anything related to MIDI, that is the reason if I'm not making sense.

The Realtek Audio is your integrated sound device, but you don't have it enabled. The only audio device you have enabled is the Presonus Inspire audio interface, which is a good idea.

Let me look at your Audio Options tabs and see if anything pops out to me.

General Tab. Your buffer size is all the way to the left and if your audio interface/system can't deliver the goods you might be better off putting the slider near the middle and seeing how that works. You can keep adjusting the slider closer to Fast over time to see what works best for you. If it is too close to the left you will hear noise. Other than that it looks OK. Your device can handle 24 bit and you are using 16. There are some advantages to using 24 bit but that setting should have no effect on the problem you are having. Some people use 24 bit, some people use 16 bit. You can always change it later if you want.

Advanced tab. Nothing there seems off. You might try using the ASIO driver mode to see if that has any effect on your problem.

Drivers Tab. I see you have two inputs enabled. If you aren't using one of them I would suggest un-checking it if only to simplify your setup. You can't use the wrong input if it isn't enabled.

Your Project Options>Sync looks fine to me.

As far as your settings go, I have only two suggestions. First, try changing the driver mode to ASIO and see if that helps. If you stay with WDM/KS try moving the slider closer to Slow. Maybe around 10ms to start with and experiment with making it faster.

And anyone else who knows more about this stuff than me, please jump in and see if you can help.
