Ok...drum maps...I have NO idea how to use one or much less get one to work...I guess I really am just looking for a video or book or some one who can explain in verrrrry simple terms what to do step by step...once I wrap my head around the concept, I am sure I will get it...I have followed X1 Power to the T and got no sound or anything to show up in the piano roll besides notes...any advice for this MIDI idiot...

Hey David,

What pages in SONAR X1 Power! are you referring to?

Check out pages 126 to 128 instead, which will walk you through the creation of a drum pattern using the Cakewalk TTS-1 soft synth for sound output.

Scott

PS. Thanks for reading the book!

Don't want to step on Scotts toes, but which synth are you using, Frosty?

I did get that I wasn't using a synth...DOHHHH...just not sure how the map is used with it...because I have to either choose the drum map as my output or whatever synth...I can't use both??

Hey David,

Try this...

1. Create a new blank project.
2. Choose Insert > Soft Synth > Studio Instruments > SI Drum Kit
3. In the Insert Soft Synth Options dialog box, put a checkmark next to MIDI Source, First Synth Audio Output, and Synth Property Page. Click OK.
4. Track 2 should be the MIDI track. Expand that track and change its output to New Drum Map > Studio Instruments - Drums.
5. Open the MIDI track in the Piano Roll view. You may or may not see the drum grid pane. If not, choose View > Show/Hide Drum Pane from the Piano Roll view menu.

You should now see all the drum instrument names listed. And when you input notes, they will show as triangles instead of regular notes.

this is the best tutorial you are ever going to use(only my opinion)

though this thread may be a wee bit overwhelming,
it is rich in neutrons of drum mapping.

very easy when you follow the link in the first post.

EDIT:im sorry to scott,i just blazed through this and didnt realize you had him going in the right direction(my apologies  :)

anyway Frosty, check this out sometime when you get time.

Yeah, you need a synth. That's where the sound comes from. The map just directs the notes.
If you already have the MIDI track set up with your synth as the output, selecting a drum map will just be a somewhat transparent in-between step. In the map itself, you can tell it where to send the notes, but you must have an active synth.
If you use TTS-1, a map is ready made, just waiting for you.
In your MIDI track, set the bank to 15360-Preset Rhythm, and the patch to any named drum set.

Now the Piano Roll will show the GM drums, instead of piano keys.
There is also a preset map for Session Drummer.
With EZDrummer, I use a limited GM map.
And you're right. Once you get it, you're good to go.

edit: Man, I type too slow.
