Hi,

I'm trying to find a specific type of software for managing and searching for (without using Windows Explorer, Windows Search or other desktop search software) my 15,000 midi files.

My problem with other desktop search software for Windows, is that the results return non MIDI and cakewalk files, and even has this problem when specifying exclusions/inclusions which are "supposed" to limit the results.

Have looked on and off for 15 years now online and was wondering if anything is out that's new.

Have done some half hearted searches with Google but haven't seem anything specific and don't want to invest in yet another desktop search utility that makes it so difficult to wrangle the "midi file only" results, even when it see's dupe names, say like in an MP3 file of a song of the same name. My experience (because I also have 30k MP3 files) is the search parameters, again, in the other software I've tried, doesn't filter things out correctly, even when specifying extensions.

Thanks.

When you use Windows Explorer search for "*.mid" (without quotations). This tells Windows to go and find every .mid file in the area(s) you've specified (C:, all HD's, My Docs, etc.). Once it finishes that search. Click on the "File Name" header once to put the files in alphabetical order. You can then easily find the file you're looking for. You can also click on Date Modified to find your most recently edited files.

Thanks.

As I stated above, Windows Explorer has problems for this. It's very slow and limited in it's parameter choices.

I have 3 internal and several external hard drives connected with backups, and by limiting what drives are searched, this makes Explorer even slower it seems. I actually have double the amount of midi files (30k as I just rechecked), and Explorer has been searching since before I started typing this reply and is still going.

Hi Jerry-

You might want to check out MIDIcat.

You're welcome! Let me know what you think if you did/do try it. I left it off my system when I changed PCs, but recently tracked down my reg # again. I haven't created any new catalogs, since it doesn't support non-standard Windows fonts. IIRC, it pretty much did what it said it would, and the preview feature wasn't half bad.

Thanks-

Ok, I'll let you know.

After I downloaded it, I took the tour of the program on the website and it looks like exactly what I need.

I'm in the middle of mixing a project now, but I will get to it soon.

Take care.

Oh yeah, nice doggy (I've got a 2 year old black Lab who always ruins my vocal takes)

I use EZPlayer Pro

Holds all the midi and nothing else

And you can create headings and easily sort stuff

I use EZPlayer Pro too, but it doesn't actually search for .mid files. You have to add the paths yourself. MIDIcat helps you find where everything is first, and it has a Duplicates search, extracts info, lets you add comments, etc. It's a different kind of tool. You can preview files in it, but EZPP has it all over MIDIcat in that department!
