...as there seem to be as many voices on each side of this line

As a long-time CW fan, -boi excluded, it does seem that Take Lanes have been one of the more controversial additions in recent versions.  ProChannel is the only other one that crosses my mind, but improvements along the way have really enhanced its worth IMO.   Here's hoping that Lanes follow suit.

I don't like Pro-Channel, nor Take Lanes. The only thing I use Pro-Channel for is the FX bin because the one included in X2 is far too tiny, but it requires the use of the Pro-Channel. In fact that's the only reason I upgraded to X2 from X1. I'd have been fine to keep Layers if X2 offered them. They were easier for me to navigate.

Take lanes is complete disaster, I hope we can have classic layers back...

This might be a long shot but it's possible they left them kind of half finished on purpose to see how us end users reacted. Like what worked and what direction the bulk of users want to see them head to. Yanno, instead of putting all the extra work of programming in a bunch of stuff that just ends up flopping then having to start from scratch.

Then maybe they could have just 'added' the take lanes instead of replacing track layers? Those who just started using Sonar (since X2) might like Track Layers better but they can't compare due to its absence.

(BTW, thanks for your reply to my earlier questions. And, yes, PLEASE submit the request )

i can agree take lanes needs some adjustments but it doesnt stink.

Initially, I liked Layers, and at first, the Pro-Channel looked quite good. I still like the Folders, hiding tracks, the way busses are laid out, Automation, Audio-Transient adjusting abilities, Screensets, color-scheme (X1 color scheme, anyway), and Smart Tool.
But, after using Pro-Channel, I ended up not liking it (wasn't as great to use as my 3rd-party plug-ins, and still isn't), so I just remove all the modules and add one FX bin so I can at least see all plug-ins for that channel. Also, unfortunately, you can't save the normal FX bin settings with the Pro-Channel settings (separate Save file is kinda clumsy to me).

As for Lanes, they blend too easily with tracks and I get seriously lost in my session when some tracks have them shown vs. other tracks, the fact that if I have one Lane solo'd, it doesn't show up in the collapsed track, editing is bad, Mutes don't always seem to work as I'd expect, and even the button to indicate that you have multiple Lanes isn't correctly indicative (Turns Blue and never turns White when all Lanes are deleted).

So, I gave them a shot and I just don't like them.

Hi Brian...

I actually like the PC as it's uniform size factor makes my screen space more manageable... And I thoroughly enjoy the plugins they have for it... I use the pc76 and ca2a as my go to compressors these days and the QuadCurve EQ is giving me excellent results.. Not to forget the console emulator which is subtle but very tasty...

..but as to the Lanes? I couldn't be more unhappy with them. I was very pleased with Layers tho I was hoping for some fixes and additions... I too find them very difficult to see as they make my screen much more confusing to my eye as it sounds you do too... That's the tip of the iceberg for my issues with Lanes...

I'm really glad that the Bakers came up with these for those who find them more accommodating than Layers...but I also pray that they find a way to return Layers as well for those of us who prefer that method...

I live in hope...

Keni

At first Take Lanes worked well for my normal work flow and I was fine with them, although I wasn't all that thrilled about the increased real estate they took up.

Then I wanted to do a guitar instruction track for a friend and the work flow that I used resulted in some really trying times (start/stop; start/stop; start/stop doing voice overs). That experience made me much more sympathetic to the issues that some are having. So as many have said I think TLs could use a bit more love.

As for the PC: I love the concept and I think it is well executed. I also like many of the dedicated PC plugs although...I sure wish I could use some of them when I am required to use a different DAW. On the other hand the recent issue of the CA-2A as a standard VST is an interesting development. My vote: turn all of them into VSTs (and keep the PC versions)...

...and send some love to Take Lanes.

I sail out of Riverside (Winter's Marina).

anyway, am I understanding that one of the main beefs with lanes is that when you collapse them the clips are jumbled and confusing?  Because I would think that editing of clips should NOT be done when lanes are collapsed- especially when you consider that different data in different clips and different lanes can be chosen to playback (mute/isolate) making it essentially impossible for Sonar to only display "clips" that are supposed to play.   Sorry for that incredibly awkward wording.

One possible solution would be to allow a "display when collapsed" button on each lane.   I guess if you solo a lane, it makes sense that only the clips from that lane should show up.   I would be down with that in the next update.

Yeah, I think Track Lanes could use a "master" lane of sorts, the one whose clips will display when the track is collapsed.   Providing that clips can be consistently moved to that lane, or better yet, with a right-click "move to master" option, this could certainly help.
