  • Korg nanoKontrol2 doesn't work after upgrade to Sonar X2

Hoping someone here has had--and solved--this problem.

I've un-/re-installed the nanoKontrol2's drivers, and reset it to work with Sonar by following Korg's 3-step instructions (there's not a lot you need to do). I've done this twice, and there's really nothing to it. I know it's set properly in Sonar, and as far as the nanoKontrol2 is concerned.

While this worked just fine in X1, I can't get it to work properly in X2. When I choose the "Mackie" controller (per Korg's instructions), I can't control any fader or knob. The nanoKontrol2 just triggers MIDI notes, which I can watch in Piano Roll View. The same thing happens for any controller I choose.

Has anyone had this problem? Is there something I'm missing here?

Thanks in advance.... Steve

I had to use the generic cakewalk controller to get my 3  fader nanokontrollers to work properly. I never did get the mackie emulation to work at all.

Did you have X1, and did the Kontrol2 work properly for you in that?

It worked for me after I installed X2. I had X1, which when I got the NK2, and had it working with it. It just worked in X2.

There's a thread way, way back that explains how to get it to work.

Could it have anything to do with the mysterious MIDI port limitation problem?

[/worship:on] Mr. Anderton, thank you for taking the time to reply, I just finished reading your excellent round-up of sample libraries in this month's Electronic Musician, and I've followed your work for years! [/worship:off]

It's interesting you should mention the "show_nonpresent_devices" trick in XP--I use that in all versions of Windows when troubleshooting client computers (and cleaning out all the junk that accumulates). But I keep this aging XP machine as "clean" as possible, and since the Kontrol2 worked in X1, and all I had done was un-install that and then install X2, I didn't know if this was a bug in X2, and just one of the many things that wouldn't get fixed in an update because I'm not on a 64-bit OS.

The Kontrol2 shows up as "active" in Device Manager, and the driver is loaded properly. The Korg editor software can even access it; Sonar is the one with the problem.

The USB ports are all "clean" and active, though I've found that removing them letting Windows re-install them can help, so I may try that.

Thanks again for your help here--and everywhere else!

Actually, I used to use Scene 2 in X1, now that you mention it, and X2 defaults to Scene 1. But when I tried Scene 2 and removed/added the Kontrol2 again as a "Mackie" control surface, Sonar just said "Connecting..." but never actually connected with the device. (When using Scene 1, it would connect, but send MIDI notes (instead of CC values) to the channel.

You wouldn't happen to know roughly when that was posted, would you? I did a search here before posting my own, and didn't see anything similar on the first several pages--at least, nothing specific to the Kontrol2 and X2.

Can you use it in X1 still? Save the preset from where you set it up originally then open that up in X2. Without looking it's hard to be sure.
