Copied the vst folder from my desktop to the laptop to see what difference it made & did a full rescan.

Dimension Pro & Zeta 2 work fine on the laptop, but I still get a problem with some simple instrument tracks being silent, and the only way to get them working is to split them into midi / audio tracks & reassign their inputs / outputs.

( btw both desktop & laptop are running X1 Expanded 32bit on Win7x64 )

And after doing that, you'd think it would let me combine them back into a simple instrument track, wouldn't you?

Well, yes & no... Sometimes it works, and sometimes it fails.

I think I might just live with avoiding simple instrument tracks for now as I don't have the time to reinstall X1, plugins, etc... on both machines as I've a music project starting tomorrow.
