for better or worse, the step sequencer is like a micro host.  you can have different notes each running to a different soft synth in sonar via one step sequencer clip.  you can do this by clicking the > arrow button and then double-clicking where the synth name is and selecting a different synth to route to.  this can be useful in setting up harmonies in step sequencer and keeping all the notes consolidated in one place.  the drawback is that all the editing has to be done via the step sequencer unless you bounce to a clip, which would screw up multiple synth outs.  it's like the same facility in a drum map where you can route to different synths.
